Dit boek is een zeer grondige herwerking van het in 1995 verschenen boek Populaire cultuur, waarin de wetenschappelijke theorievorming over populaire cultuur centraal stond. Dat blijft ook het opzet van dit boek: een analyse bieden van hoe veelal elitaire intellectuelen hebben nagedacht over de cultuur zonder hoofdletter of de cultuur met een kleine c. Zoals in het Manifest van een cultuurpopulist (Acco, 2003) zit ook doorheen deze tekst een stellingname verweven, misschien niet altijd expliciet, maar dan toch impliciet. Dit boek probeert het elitaire spreken van bepaalde sociologen en culturo's over cultuur met een kleine c te ontmaskeren. Wanneer vaak elitaire doemdenkers praten over de cultuur van het volk, kan men daar een moeilijk uit te roeien dieptestructuur blootleggen, die wij `de cultuurdriehoek` hebben genoemd. Deze cultuurdriehoek (van massacultuur ten opzichte van hoge cultuur en volkscultuur) blijft het cultuurdebat hardnekkig voeden. Ter illustratie van de manier waarop populaire cultuur wel degelijk zinvol bestudeerd kan worden, zijn in dit boek nog niet eerder gepubliceerde teksten opgenomen over jeugdculturen, toerisme, BV's, sterren in reclame voor een zeepproduct, en tuinkabouters.

Van der Graaf researches the emotional ties of residents to their deprived neighbourhood. In transforming deprived areas into great places to live much attention has been given to the physical, social and economical aspects of deprivation. However, little is known about the relationship between deprivation and emotional ties: What makes residents in deprived areas feel at home in their neighbourhood? In this PhD thesis Peter van der Graaf focused on the emotional ties of residents to their neighbourhood and researched how these ties are affected by urban renewal. He also compares practices between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where the emotions of residents are considered more in urban renewal.

Cultural citizenship is a recently developed concept in discussions on multicultural society, the media society, consumerism, and political theory. It addresses the various ways in which citizenship is becoming mixed up with culture, either through globalisation processes (involving new cultural identities, immigrations, culture industries) or by increasingly life-style oriented types of action. In the face of these challenges, the good old notion of citizenship seems in need of some assistance. This book takes a fresh look at cultural citizenship by exploring it from political-philosophical angles. It seeks to develop explicitly normative perspectives on the present debates around culture. What do the novel national and global constellations mean with respect to inclusion and exclusion, participation and marginalisation, political rights and ‘mere’ cultural practices? Moreover, this volume’s authors aim to develop notions of cultural citizenship beyond the liberal political paradigm that associates it with ‘cultural rights’, ‘cultural capital’ or the ‘consumer-citizen’. They engage the concept to re-think politics in both its meanings of citizenship practices and governance practices vis-à-vis citizens. The authors address a range of pertinent issues, exploring historical as well as present-day understandings, and theoretical as well as policy applications of the notion of cultural citizenship. This book was originally published as a special issue of Citizenship Studies.

Conflicten over belangen, waarden, doelen en middelen komen vaak voor tussen groepen of personen met een verschillende religieuze, culturele of etnische identiteit. De conflictdynamiek scherpt deze verschillen vaak verder aan en dat belemmert een vreedzame oplossing van het geschil. Dergelijke verschillen staan een eenvoudige oplossing tijdens de onderhandelingen of bemiddeling dikwijls in de weg, doordat ze kunnen leiden tot uiteenlopende interpretaties van het geschil, vooroordelen tegen de andere partij, onwetendheid of verkeerde interpretatie van culturele uitingen en symbolen. Sociaal-economische-, gender- of taalproblemen komen hier vaak nog bovenop. Dergelijke verschillen vereisen specifieke onderhandelingsvormen en mediationstijlen. Hierbij kan bijvoorbeeld worden gedacht aan andere omgangsvormen, verbale- en non-verbale communicatie, het vermijden van te direct taalgebruik, alsook het schenken van speciale aandacht aan rituelen en context.
