In order to defend it I will consider some possible objections coming from the competing positions of classical foundationalism and coherentism. However, as both of these approaches involve serious difficulties, I will counter these objections and show the advantages of modest foundationalism. At the end, it will, hopefully, have become clear that a modest foundationalism is able to integrate also coherentist as well as externalist intuitions to a certain degree, which enables it to be a far more plausible position than any of the extremes. I have to note an important decision that precedes my critical examination of these opposing theories and my plea for modest foundationalism. This inquiry is based on the meta-epistemological point of view according to which the task of a theory of epistemic justification is a descriptive one, in a sense analogous to the distinction between descriptive and revisionary metaphysics drawn by Peter Strawson in the introduction of his Individuals. Therefore, I take it to be one of the tasks of epistemology to explicate the standards underlying our ordinary use of the word 'justified'. This preliminary decision concerning the goal and method of epistemology determines the evaluation both of classical foundationalism and coherentism in the following discussion.

Merton ́s functional analysis. The starting point is the description of what Weber understands as rationalization and his conceptualization of the three types of legitimate domination. The purest and most rational type of legal domination is in Weber ́s eyes bureaucracy with its benefits of precision, calculability, controllability and efficiency – in short, with its technical superiority. Weber ́s position concerning bureaucratization is ambivalent, because he also sees the negative consequences in dehumanization and excessive control, which ends in an „iron cage‟. Merton analysis outlines the dysfunctions resulting from bureaucratic structures. The negative consequences he identifies are the displacement of goals, the trained incapacity, over-conformity and esprit de corps of the officials and the depersonalization of relationships.

In the course of development of the linguistics as a field of studies particularly dedicated to the task of exploring the language faculty and its features a lot of breakthrough discoveries have been made. With respect to the particular point of research, there are several subcategories of linguistics that are the direct result of the interactive research on a particular phenomenon. The cognitive linguistics is, doubtlessly, one of the few such linguistic branches, that is composed of the research fields of sciences such as: psychology, anthropology, philosophy and computer science. However, cognitive linguistics does not focus on particular features of language or particular parts of the grammar, but attempts to discover its interplay with perception of the world, that is, the reality that surrounds the human beings. In its characterisation of the language as part of the cognitive system and not an independent feature, the cognitive linguistics is in opposition to the generative linguistics and the Chomskyan postulation that language faculty is inborn. Moreover, Chomsky claims that language is “modular”, that is, it exists individually from the other cognitive faculties. The main aim of the cognitive linguistics is to discover the laws of structure of natural language categorisation as well as the intricate connection between language and thought. Terry Regier defines its function in the following manner: “In the domain of semantics in particular, cognitive linguistics seeks to ground meaning not directly in the world, but in mental and perceptual representations of the world“. (1996: 27) As the methodology and historical development of this field of studies are quite extensive, this paper will rather focus on the analysis of the main division of classical, also known as Aristotelian and modern theory. In the analysis of these two juxtaposed theories the pioneer work of the linguist William Labov and the psychologist Elisabeth Rosch would be taken into consideration. An emphasis would be put on Eleanor Rosch ́s findings with respect to the extent of her contribution to the new ways of understanding categorisation of entities and clarification of certain aspects. Furthermore, some critical approaches of her findings would be regarded.

From the early welfare economics to the present modern welfare economics, a jubilant battle can be seen among different profounders in the welfare interpretation. The methodological difference provides us an opportunity to compare different welfare economic theories and also to improve the understanding of welfare economics. Classical economists were used dynamic and normative methodologies while later developments in welfare economics became narrow-minded by following static and positive economics by putting assumptions, mathematical and other models. Classical theories were influenced in the idea of ‘invisible hand’ and argue that, the social welfare can be enlarged at the point where the highest level of happiness scan be enjoyed by maximum number. On the other side, the later developments especially by later neoclassical theories began to weaken the role of ‘invisible hand’. Moreover the analysis was based on predicting social welfare by simply assuming two individual model frameworks. Here, vividly, the scope of modern interpretation became too extreme by neglecting the role of multiple factors of a plural society in the welfare determination process. Very recently, few interesting welfare interpretations are also coming with multidisciplinary approach like Samuelson’s social welfare functions, Sen’s capability approach etc. In fact, the methodological battle in handling both qualitative and quantitative variables, classical economists follows general equilibrium analysis while later developments focus on ‘Paretian Condition’ analysis. So the prediction of social welfare from the Pareto analysis of modern welfare economics has very limited scope than the classical economics.
