Hij is weer terug, er ist wieder da, de door de geallieerden in Neurenberg bij verstek ter dood veroordeelde SS-generaal Gottfried Judejahn. Onverwacht herrezen en terug uit de woestijn, waar hij de Arabieren discipline heeft geleerd voor hun beslissende slag tegen de jonge jodenstaat Israël. Incognito (en met een grote zonnebril) rijdt hij in een grote Mercedes met Arabisch kenteken Rome binnen. Het thuisfront heeft hij laten weten, dat hij voor belangrijke zaken in de stad zou zijn. Zijn vrouw Eva en haar zus Anna zijn met diens echtgenoot, SS-kameraad Friedrich Wilhelm Pfaffrath, naar Rome gereisd en zitten op de dood gewaande te wachten. Eva is zenuwachtig, zij heeft moeite afscheid te nemen van het idee van een voor de Führer gesneuvelde held. Bovendien vreest zij een ontmoeting met Adolf, haar moeilijke zoon die de familie ontvlucht is naar een Vaticaans priesterseminarie. Maar ook Judejahn ziet ineens op tegen de familiereünie. Hij voelt zich onzeker, zonder uniform is hij zijn gezag kwijt. Voor het bloedmooie meisje met de ondeugende blik achter de bar is hij gewoon een toerist! Als hij een affiche met de aankondiging van de eerste Symfonie van de zoon van SS-kameraad Pfaffrath ziet, verschuift hij de familieontmoeting naar de volgende dag, op de concertpremière. In zijn stilistisch schitterende en grensverleggende roman ontvouwt Koeppen een adembenemend familietafereel van agressie en haat, schuld en schande, angst en (moord)lust. Daders en wegkijkers – iedereen ontkent of bagatelliseert woedend of beledigd zijn of haar aandeel aan de Duitse catastrofe. Het heeft dan ook meer dan een halve eeuw geduurd tot De dood in Rome herkend wordt als dat wat het is: een uniek tijdsbeeld en een literair meesterwerk, woedend van schaamte.
