Cornelis Chastelein (1657-1714) werd in Amsterdam geboren en stamde uit een Hollandse regentenfamilie die oorspronkelijk uit Dordrecht kwam. Na het overlijden van zijn ouders vertrok hij als jongeman naar Indië. Daar maakte hij snel carrière in dienst van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) en in Batavia ontwikkelde hij zich tot een eigenzinnig, visionair en gerespecteerd VOC-bestuurder. Chasteleins missie werd om Indië om te vormen van een wingewest tot een duurzame kolonie, waarin de lokale bevolking meer autonomie kreeg en lokale tradities meer werden gerespecteerd. Hij beschreef zijn ideeën over agrarische, sociale en bestuurlijke hervormingen in een aantal intrigerende manifesten. Bovendien bracht hij die ideeën ook daadwerkelijk in praktijk. In de destijds onontgonnen ommelanden van Batavia verwierf hij landerijen, waar hij zijn levenswerk tot stand bracht: het land Depok. Daar stichtte hij voor zijn christenslaven een autonome en zelfvoorzienende landbouwgemeenschap. Chasteleins testament is vrijwel volledig gewijd aan zijn erfenis aan zijn christenslaven. Zij verkregen hun vrijheid en werden gezamenlijk eigenaar van het land Depok, waarover zij bovendien zelfbestuur kregen. Daarmee werd de erfenis van Chastelein niet alleen een aanklacht tegen het VOC-beleid; het vormde ook een ongekend en uniek sociaal experiment. In 1714 verkregen de vrijgemaakte christenslaven landerijen om ‘ten eeuwige daage, offte voor altijt gemeen beseeten ende gebruyke [te] sullen werden’. Inmiddels is het geslacht Chastelein uitgestorven en is het land Depok opgegaan in de miljoenenstad Kota Depok, grenzend aan het huidige Jakarta. De gemeenschap van rechtstreekse nazaten van de vrijgemaakte christenslaven bestaat echter nog steeds in de oude historische kern van Kota Depok, al zijn veel van hen ook elders over de wereld verspreid geraakt. Hun erfenis omvat een veelzijdige geschiedenis van ruim drie eeuwen, die niet alleen hun sociaal-culturele identiteit heeft bepaald, maar ook een uniek licht werpt op de geschiedenis van dit deel van Indonesië en zijn bewoners.
