De ontkoppeling speelt zich af in een moderne buitenwijk in New Jersey waar de vrouwen -een voor een- in een sprookjesachtige ban raken en zich afkeren van hun mannen. Robby en Dory Lang zijn een docentenechtpaar dat benijd wordt om hun goede, liefdevolle huwelijk. Toch is Dory een van de eerste vrouwen die zich -als betoverd- van haar man afwendt, maar al snel volgt de rest van de vrouwelijke bevolking. Niemand begrijpt de oorzaak en niemand weet hoe ze hun vertrouwde leven en gevoelens weer terug kan krijgen. De reactie onder de mannen over het verlies van intimiteit varieert van woede, verdriet en angst tot onverschilligheid voor de mannen die de verandering niet hebben opgemerkt. In welke levensfase je je ook bevindt, en wat je eigen ervaring ook is, iedereen zal zich kunnen identificeren met iemand in deze even betoverende als enerverende roman.

This thesis presents recent developments within the pure spinor formalism, which has simplified amplitude computations in perturbative string theory, especially when spacetime fermions are involved. Firstly the worldsheet action of both the minimal and the non-minimal pure spinor formalism is derived from first principles, i.e. from an action with two dimensional diffeomorphism and Weyl invariance. Secondly the decoupling of unphysical states in the minimal pure spinor formalism is proved.Joost Hoogeveen (1984) studied physics and mathematics, initially at the University of Amsterdam. In 2004 he continued these studies at the University of Cambridge. In 2005 he started his PhD research at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Amsterdam.

Is economic growth good for the environment? A number of economists have claimed that economic growth can benefit the environment, recruiting political support and finance for environmental policy measures. This view has received increasing support since the early 1990s from empirical evidence that has challenged the traditional environmentalist's belief that economic growth degrades the environment. This book reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on growth and the environment, giving an in-depth empirical treatment of the relationship between the two. Various hypotheses are formulated and tested for a number of indicators of environmental pressure. The test results indicate that alternative models and estimation methods should be used, altering previous conclusions about the effect of economic growth on the environment and offering an insight into the forces driving emission reduction in developed countries.

The environmental problematique is intimately bound up with deep-seated human attitudes regarding our relationship with nature. Here in the west those attitudes have been shaped to no small degree by the canonical texts of the Bible and the classical philosophers. In this book the author re-examines some of these seminal texts, arguing that what we today know as 'Christian cosmology' is in fact a grafting of classical Greek philosophy onto ancient Israelite thought, with certain valuable traditions being all but lost in the process. The dietary laws of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in particular, still prove surprisingly relevant today. Often misread on this point, the creation narratives of Genesis can likewise serve as a rich point of departure for examining our attitudes towards the natural world. A reappraisal of these sources is necessary and feasible. There is no need for an appeal to cosmologies alien to our own culture, nor for recourse to 'New Age' beliefs in all their variety.
