Wanneer Jan Reijnders voor zijn stiefbroer Peter gaat werken voor een opdracht in de havens van Amsterdam, genaamd Project 42, blijkt plotseling het project niet meer door te gaan door gif dat in de grond gevonden zou zijn. Zijn stiefbroer Peter heeft echter tegen hem gelogen. In werkelijkheid heeft Peter diep in een tunnel onder de grond een schat gevonden, afkomstig van een schip van Willem Hendriksen de IIe uit 1745. Samen met zijn volle broer Simon smeedt Peter een plan om de schat voor henzelf te houden, Simon kan hieraan prima meewerken omdat die de volledige controle heeft over bodemsanering. Simon dumpt zelfs gif op de grond van Project 42 zodat hij samen met Peter de schat kan verdonkeremanen. Peter heeft ook een mysterieuze ketting gevonden bij de schat, afkomstig uit Afrika. De ketting herbergt de door Satan vervloekte ziel van Om N'gai (of Om Nagai), een voodoopriester wiens ziel in de ketting leeft. Jan komt per ongeluk achter de plannen van zijn stiefbroers Peter en Simon en tijdens een ruzie waarbij hij Peter bewusteloos slaat verleidt de ketting hemom het te dragen. Wanneer iemand echter de ketting om doet raakt hij langzaam maar zeker vervloekt door Om Nagai, wiens doel het is de drager zijn of haar lichaam totaal te bezitten.

Pier Pasolini’s “trilogy of life” is a series of film adaptations of major texts of the past: The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, and One Thousand and One Nights. The movies demonstrate a film author’s acute aesthetic sensibility through a highly original cinematic rendering of the sources. The first two films, closely examined in this book, offer a personal, purposefully stylized vision of the Middle Ages, as though Pasolini were dreaming Boccaccio’s and Chaucer’s texts through the filter of his “heretic” consciousness. The unusual poetic visualization of the source works, which could be described as irreverent cinematic homage, has the potential to renew the traditional reading of such literature. This book shows how cinema becomes an alternative form of storytelling. It first studies the two films in detail, putting them in perspective within the trilogy. Next it interprets them, recounting misinterpretations and expounding upon Pasolini’s ideological perception, and defends the oft-criticized adaptations. Finally, it discusses how the films represent innovation over strict adaptation. Appendices offer charts with information on the narrative structures of the films and the correspondences between them.
