Onderweg proberen we te begrijpen waarom Winston Churchill besloot de Franse vloot te laten zinken, Rosemary Kennedy een hersenoperatie onderging en Maurice Ravel de Bolero schreef. Uitein¬delijk belanden we bij het ik, die constante maal¬stroom van gedachten die denkt de hersenen in ons hoofd onder controle te hebben. En bij de vrije wil, waarvan heel weinig _ en toch ook weer heel veel _ overblijft in het onthutsende beeld dat wordt geschetst van wie er echt de baas is in ons brein. Victor Lamme (1959) is hoogleraar cognitieve neurowetenschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij publi¬ceerde circa negentig internationale artikelen en hoofdstukken over de werking van het brein, visuele waarneming en vooral het bewustzijn, onder meer in gezaghebbende tijdschriften als Nature en Science. Zijn ideeën over bewustzijn worden als baanbrekend gezien, en hij ontving voor zijn werk de meest prestigieuze subsidie van de Europese Unie.

Ook wie over vrije wil nadenkt, kan niet meer buiten de gegevens van de neurowetenschappen. Filosofen, theologen en in mindere mate psychologen hebben gedurende eeuwen over het vrijewilprobleem nagedacht. Dat behoort trouwens tot hun opdracht en kunde. Luc Crevits bekijkt dit thema als neurowetenschapper. Hij is niet geremd door de struikelblokken die eigen zijn aan de kennis van beroeps filosofen. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat neurowetenschappers moeten meespreken in de hedendaagse maatschappelijke kwesties. Anderzijds is hij er zich ook van bewust dat een eeuwenoud studieonderwerp niet in enkele decennia ten gronde neurobiologisch kan worden opgehelderd. Dit boek laat zich niet samenvatten met de quote ‘vrije wil bestaat (niet)’. De lectuur ervan levert immers geen pasklare antwoorden. Dat is ook niet mogelijk. De lezer zal na lectuur wel beschikken over een voorlopig kader dat nog aangepast en verder uitgewerkt kan worden.

Common sense philosophy holds that widely and deeply held beliefs are justified in the absence of defeaters.
