The diagnostic assessment of writing is an important aspect of language testing which has often been neclected in the literature. However, it is an area which poses special challenges to practioners both in the classroom and in large-scale testing situations. This book presents a study which set out to develop and validate a rating scale specifically designed for the diagnostic assessment of writing in an academic English setting. The scale was developed by analysing a large number of writing performances produced by both native speakers of English and learners of English as an additional language. The rating scale was then validated using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study showed that a detailed data-based rating scale is more valid and more useful for diagnostic purposes than the more commonly used impressionistic rating scale.

In this innovative book, a compelling case is made for SFL writing as an individual, contextual, and multidimensional ability, combining several theoretically informed approaches upon which to base diagnosis. Using the diagnostic cycle as the overarching framework, the book starts with the planning phase, cover design, development, and delivery of diagnostic assessment, ending with feedback and feed-forward aspects to feed diagnostic information into the teaching and learning process. It covers means to diagnose both the writing processes and products, including the design and development of diagnostic tasks and rating scales, as well as automated approaches to assessment. Also included is a range of existing instruments and approaches to diagnosing SFL writing. Addressing large-scale as well as classroom contexts, this volume is useful for researchers, teachers, and educational policy-makers in language learning.

Diagnosing learning disabilities (LD) in children has never been an easy task. The multiple approaches in use complicate the assessment process, raising the risk of young students getting the wrong services, or none at all. It is clear that more accurate diagnosis and classification methods are needed to advance the prevention and treatment of difficulties in reading and mathematics. Diagnostic Assessment of Learning Disabilities in Childhood takes important steps to cut through the confusion. This timely resource weighs the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used assessment methods including the aptitude-achievement discrepancy, cognitive processing, RTI and low achievement approaches and introduces the author's academic impairment model as a promising alternative. A chapter on comorbid disorders in students with LD guides readers in the fine points of differential diagnosis. And to make the coverage especially practical, the book's features link the theoretical to the real-world practice of LD assessment, among them: Overviews of LD identification and definitions. Analysis of widely used diagnostic approaches with strengths and weaknesses. Examples of assessment protocols and report writing. Case examples illustrating diagnostic issues. Q&A sections with leading experts in the field. Useful summaries, appendices and resource links. Diagnostic Assessment of Learning Disabilities in Childhood is an invaluable reference for school and clinical child psychologists, special education and allied educational professionals and researchers and graduate students in school, educational and clinical child psychology who are dedicated to higher measurement standards and greater opportunities for children’s academic success.

A GUIDE TO CLINICAL ASSESSMENT AND PROFESSIONAL REPORT WRITING IN SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY, 1E not only provides guidance for the often overwhelming process of assessing speech and language disorders but also offers robust diagnostic report writing tools in one user-friendly resource. Organized by disorder, this book is the only one to provide a sample report for each of the major communicative disorders discussed. It also includes a chapter devoted to basic report writing skills and grammar. The assessment aspects of the book offer an in-depth chapter on counseling, a detailed and comprehensive chapter on dysphasia for both pediatric and adult populations, and a clear and practical chapter on assessment of accent. Each chapter is written by experts in their area of communication disorders and provides the following information: background and characteristics of the disorder; parameters for assessment; pertinent interview questions; an inventory and explanation of relevant formal and informal assessment measures in narrative and table format; a section on differential diagnosis to assist in teasing out the specific problem; and a sample case history with assessment tools chosen for that vignette along with rationale for making such selections. All this information is woven into a sample diagnostic report and a similar assignment is provided for practice, making this an ideal resource for ESL learners as well as students preparing for the praxis. Every chapter includes a list of key vocabulary and a glossary to familiarize your students with the professional vernacular relevant for writing diagnostic reports.
