Zwischen Dezember 1963 und August 1965 fand in Frankfurt am Main der Auschwitz-Prozeß statt, in dem die für das Funktionieren der Vernichtungsmaschinerie Verantwortlichen vor Gericht standen. Peter Weiss hat in seinem 1965 gleichzeitig an 15 Orten uraufgeführten dokumentarischen Theaterstück die Fakten über diese Hölle auf Erden, die im Prozeß zur Sprache kamen, in Gesängen gestaltet: Gesang von der Rampe, Gesang vom Lager, Gesang vom Bunkerblock. In ihnen wurden Täter und Opfer miteinander konfrontiert, und auf diese Weise wird, gerade durch den Verzicht der Rekonstruktion individueller Erlebnisse und die Betonung der funktionalen Aspekte, das Grauen dieser Tötungsfabrik deutlich. Zugleich wird die Möglichkeit gezeigt, daß sich ähnliches wiederholen könnte, und die Notwendigkeit, dies zu verhindern.

The characters in the novel are based on members of the Rote Kapelle resistance group. Politics and creative thinking (art) are shown as complementary, not contradictory.

The volume assesses performative structures within a variety of medieval forms of textuality, from vernacular literature to records of parliamentary proceedings, from prayer books to musical composition. Three issues are central to the volume: the role of ritual speech acts; the way in which authorship can be seen as created within medieval texts rather than as a given category; finally, phenomena of voice, created and situated between citation and repetition, especially in forms which appropriate and transform literary tradition. The volume encompasses articles by historians and musicologists as well as literary scholars. It spans European literature from the West (French, German, Italian) to the East (Church Slavonic), vernacular and Latin; it contrasts modes of liturgical meditation in the Western and Eastern Church with secular plays and songs, and it brings together studies on the character of ‛voice’ in major medieval authors such as Dante with examples of Dante-reception in the early twentieth century.

Scholarship often presumes that texts written about the Shoah, either by those directly involved in it or those writing its history, must always bear witness to the affective aftermath of the event, the lingering emotional effects of suffering. Drawing on the History of Emotions and on trauma theory, this monograph offers a critical study of the ambivalent attributions and expressions of emotion and “emotionlessness” in the literature and historiography of the Shoah. It addresses three phenomena: the metaphorical discourses by which emotionality and the purported lack thereof are attributed to victims and to perpetrators; the rhetoric of affective self-control and of affective distancing in fiction, testimony and historiography; and the poetics of empathy and the status of emotionality in discourses on the Shoah. Through a close analysis of a broad corpus centred around the work of W. G. Sebald, Dieter Schlesak, Ruth Klüger and Raul Hilberg, the book critically contextualises emotionality and its attributions in the post-war era, when a scepticism of pathos coincided with demands for factual rigidity. Ultimately, it invites the reader to reflect on their own affective stances towards history and its commemoration in the twenty-first century.
