Intimately Associated For Many Years written by Gerhard Besier and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-17 with History categories.

The Anglican Bishop George Bell (of Chichester) and the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Willem A. Visser’t Hooft (of Geneva) exchanged hundreds of letters between 1938 and 1958. The correspondence, reproduced and commented upon here, mirrors the efforts made across the ecumenical movement to unite the Christian churches and also to come to terms with an age of international crisis and conflict. In these first decades of the World Council, it was widely felt that the Church could make a noteworthy contribution to the mitigation of political tensions all over the world. That’s why Bell and Visser’t Hooft talked not only to bishops and the clergy, but also to the prime ministers and presidents of many countries. They raised their voices in memoranda and published their public letters in important newspapers. This was the World Council’s most successful period.

Archbishop Fisher’s archiepiscopate reflected the central issues of his time and place. It was Fisher who oversaw an immense programme of reforms which effectively recast the institutions of the Church of England for generations to come. It was Fisher who proved to be the essential architect, politician and diplomat behind the creation of a worldwide Anglican Communion. His determination to promote the development of relations with other churches produced a vital contribution to the cause of ecumenism, which culminated in his momentous meeting with Pope John XXIII. Archbishop Fisher was a vigorous participant in the questions which defined national and international life. This book explores Fisher’s influence on major contemporary issues and events, including divorce-law reform and capital punishment at home and the end of Empire and the most dangerous years of the Cold War abroad. This new biography establishes the continuing significance not only of the office of Archbishop in the Church but also of the Church at large in the tumultuous world of the later twentieth century. A final section of original source material includes letters, sermons and other writings bringing vividly to life the range and character of Fisher's public and private role.

Protestants In Communist East Germany written by Wendy R. Tyndale and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Religion categories.

This is the story of how the Protestants in the GDR struggled to survive while striving to put their theology into practice and remaining true to their vision of what the role of the church should be - a 'church for others' as Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it. Having taken the reader from the foundation of the GDR, through the peaceful revolution, to the unification of Germany, the story ends with some reflections on the church's past as well as on the challenges it faces in present-day Europe. Protestants in Communist East Germany makes a unique contribution to existing literature by drawing not only on written sources but on a series of first-hand interviews with theologians, pastors and lay people of different ages whose experiences, views and analyses bring the story to life. The East German church's relationship to the state will probably always remain controversial and the vision for a different socialism in the GDR espoused by those involved in the peaceful revolution may now be considered illusory. Nevertheless, many of the issues raised by the Protestants in the GDR remain as vital challenges to the churches in Europe today. Foreword by Paul Oestreicher.

Bringing together political, diplomatic, economic, cultural, and contemporary history, this book explores why and how European integration came to pass. It tells a fascinating story of ideals and realpolitik, political dreams and geographical realities, and planning and chaos. Mathieu Segers reveals that the roots of today's European Union lie deep in Europe's past and encompass more than war and peace, or diplomacy and economics. Based on original archival and primary source research, Segers provides an integrated history of the beginnings of European integration and the emergence of post-war Western Europe and today's European Union. The Origins of European Integration offers a broad perspective on the genealogy of post-war Western Europe, providing readers with a deeper understanding of contemporary European history and the history of transatlantic relations.

Wounded Visions written by Jonas Jonson and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-07 with Religion categories.

Jonas Jonson, who was directly involved with the ecumenical movement for forty years, offers in this book an inside perspective on an ever-changing global Christianity. Reviewing developments in ecumenism from the 1960s to the present, Jonson discusses the decolonization of mission, interreligious relations, “God’s preferential option for the poor,” and unity in diversity. He also maps the global ecumenical landscape and presents the “Fourth Church” — comprising charismatic, Pentecostal, and evangelical movements of the twentieth century. How did the ecumenical movement respond to the fall of communism, the opening of China, and the globalization of financial markets? Why did so many big churches, caught in the whirlwind of change, retreat from their ecumenical commitments in order to promote and protect their own interests? Jonson addresses these questions and more in this comprehensive review of global Christianity and the ecumenical movement.

How do the following factors influence the relationship between the churches of Lower Saxony from 1945 to 1975? Anja Peycke analyses the size and the organisation of the Protestant Lutheran Churches and Roman Catholic dioceses, the social-political context, the relationship between state and church, controversial-theological issues, psychological and linguistic barriers, congregations and parishes as well as the position of Catholic and Protestant bishops. Here, she designs an individual "ecumenical portrait" for each congregation and parish, depicting important structures, personalities, influences and positions on ecumenism and interconfessional cooperation. For the regional perspective, national and international contexts of Christianity are considered as well as the socio-political background of the Federal Republic of Germany.
