New-Economy-Welle wurden im Sommer des Jahres 2000 in mehreren europaischen Landern die Lizenzen fur einen neuen Mobilfunkstandard versteigert. Das sog. Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS, 3G) hat eine wesentlich hohere Bandbreite als der bisher in Europa vorherrschende Standard, das sog. Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM, 2G) bzw. dessen Weiterentwicklung General Packet Radio Service (GPRS, 2.5G). Diese neue Mobilfunkgeneration erlaubt nicht nur eine deutlich verbesserte Sprachubertragung, sondern in Verbindung mit geeigneten Endgeraten auch die Live-Ubertragung von Videobildern und die Ubertragung von grossen Datenmengen in kurzer Zeit. Damit wird eine mobile Internetnutzung moglich, die neben professionellen Anwendungen auch Informations- und Unterhaltungsangebote beinhalten kann. Die mobilen Dienste der dritten Generation leiden moglicherweise an dem gleichen Akzeptanzproblem wie der neue digitale Standard fur den standortgebundenen Internetzugang (Digital Subscriber Line, DSL). Der technische Vorteil wird offenbar nicht als Nutzenvorteil erkannt bzw. akzeptiert. Das Marketing der Mobilfunkbetreiber, nicht nur fur die neue Technik, wird von Branchenbeobachtern als nicht ausreichend differenziert betrachtet. Dabei ist der Mobilfunkmarkt bereits seit geraumer Zeit ein sich der Sattigung nahernder Massenmarkt und als solcher zweifellos von einer Heterogenitat der Konsumenten und ihrer Bedurfnisse und Anforderungen gepragt. Ein Segmentierungswerkzeug, das an den Nutzenerwartungen von Konsumenten ansetzt, scheint vor diesem Hintergrund geeignet zu erfassen, inwiefern der technische Vorteil von den Verwendern als Nutzenvorteil erkannt
