Exercise and diet are key factors in the etiology and prevention of chronic disease. While most books on chronic disease have a decided clinical approach, Diet, Exercise, and Chronic Disease: The Biological Basis of Prevention brings together the latest cellular- and molecular-based research on the etiology of chronic diseases and the impact of various aspects of diet and exercise on the causal mechanisms. By focusing on cellular biology, details of the integrative nature of the many different underlying factors are revealed—details that are not evident with the prevailing clinical approach to chronic disease. This book highlights chronic diseases that are major causes of mortality, and which have sufficient molecular evidence for dietary and activity-related components to their etiology. Individual chapters examine the role of diet and exercise in diabetes, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease. They cover aspects such as disease etiology, effects of diet and exercise, and the cellular and molecular mechanisms of how various dietary components and repeated exercise alter disease etiology to contribute to disease prevention. Since inflammatory signaling is a fundamental component of the chronic diseases discussed, the book includes a separate chapter on inflammation and innate immune responses. Obesity as a contributing factor is addressed within the specific disease chapters. The book also reviews what is known about the factors that influence food intake in humans. This reference translates molecular-based data on etiology and prevention into a clinical prescription for the prevention of chronic disease.

Evolutionary Aspects Of Nutrition And Health written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01-01 with Science categories.

The issues treated in this publication are brought together in this way for the first time. For many of the chronic diseases, familial predispositions are well established, and there is good evidence for true genetic predisposition. When Homo erectus emerged 1.7 million years ago, humans existed as non-cereal-eating hunter-gatherers. It is on this basis that, according to the hypothesis of the 'carnivore connection', an insulin-resistant genotype evolved to provide survival and reproductive advantages to populations adapted to a high meat, low plant food (low carbohydrate) nutritional environment. Cereal became the major source of calories and protein in the human diet only about 10,000 years ago. Humankind has thus had little evolutionary experience to adapt to this new food type, maladaption being the consequence. Moreover, studies comparing energy expenditure in Western societies and during the Paleolithic period indicate a low level of physical activity not previously encountered in human history, a state to which humans are not genetically adapted. Together with the dietary changes, this has led to a modern environment in which a number of individuals are prone to chronic diseases, causing increases in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer and obesity. As a consequence, the lifestyle approach for the prevention and management of these diseases is essential, varying with national dietary patterns and national economy. This publication will be of special interest to physicians, geneticists, nutritionists, dieticians, anthropologists, food technologists, food-policy-makers and individuals interested in personal and family health.

The Exercise Professional S Guide To Optimizing Health written by Jeffrey L. Roitman and has been published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Medical categories.

Published in cooperation with the American College of Sports Medicine, The Exercise Professional's Guide to Optimizing Health enables you to design and implement exercise programs based on the latest research to help people avoid the onset of chronic disease. Moreover, it shows you how to design exercise programs so that people with chronic disease can safely benefit from exercise. This text begins with an overview of the epidemiology of chronic disease and is then divided into three parts. Part One clearly explains pathophysiology concepts common to all chronic diseases as well as the healthful effects of exercise and nutrition. Part Two covers atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, with specific recommendations for effective exercise programs to manage each disease. Finally, Part Three discusses behavior change and then summarizes all the exercise prescription information for each chronic disease in a single chapter.

'Why are we losing the war against obesity and chronic disease?' This is the simple question Peter Gluckman and Mark Hanson ask, exploring the dominant myth that the exploding epidemic of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes can be tackled by focusing on adult life styles. Addressing the flawed approach of the weight-loss industry, they explain why a continued focus simply on diet and exercise will fail. Highlighting the implications of the growing burden of these problems in the developing world, they show that the scientific enterprise ignores the reality of the social, cultural, and biological determinants that make different populations and people respond differently to living in the modern nutritionally rich world. Gluckman and Hanson review the overwhelming scientific evidence that much of the problem emerges in early life and even before birth, identifying that to address these issues requires considering development in two dimensions - a life course approach and addressing the developmental challenges of countries emerging through the socioeconomic transition. Asking why the major global bodies and vested interests fail to consider these dimensions and continue with failed approaches, they conclude by discussing the complex interactions between health and the food industry, and suggest that the food industry must be co-opted as an ally in this battle, providing a clear pathway forward.

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Nutrition and Fitness Conference in Shanghai, held in November 2006 under the auspices of the World Council on Nutrition, Fitness and Health. Starting with a keynote presentation on nutrition, fitness and the concept of positive health from ancient times to the present, the focus then shifts to the role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in health and disease. Other topics addressed are non-conventional genetic risk factors for cardiovascular disease; the impact of the APO E genotype on health, nutrition and fitness; nutrition in the prevention of chronic disease; and the connection between exercise and obesity. Papers on nutritional risk factors for gastrointestinal cancers; mediterranean diets as a global resource in health and disease; as well as political issues conclude the presentations. Covering a wide spectrum of issues, these proceedings will be of interest to geneticists, nutritionists and dieticians, exercise physiologists, cultural anthropologists, historians, pediatricians, internists, general practitioners, health care providers, scientists in industry and government, policymakers, and national and international governmental organizations.

This is the second of two volumes presenting the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Nutrition and Fitness. The papers in this volume consist of reviews as well as new data recommending new approaches for the prevention of chronic disease, taking into consideration the essential features of ancestral human existence - particularly during the Paleolithic period - during which the human genome was programmed. Western diets and current patterns of physical activity lead to imbalances in essential fatty acids and physical inactivity that promote obesity, insulin resistance, and variation in mood and mental health. Data are presented on the different effects of fatty acids on human metabolism, on the regulation of lipid metabolism during exercise, on the metabolic effects of endurance exercise, on mood and its relationship to physical activity and nutrition, and on the immune system. Moreover, it is clear that physical activity ensures nutritional well-being in the elderly. The application of this knowledge is essential to both Western cultures and societies in transition.
