The objective of this study is to reduce energy operating costs by introducing electrical energy conservation programmes such as improving lighting efficiency, reducing internal energy transmission losses along power cables and to replace inefficient equipment with energy efficient products for retrofit commercial buildings. Retrofitting commercial building has been defined as existing commercial bulding that will be undergoing major upgrading works such as replacing of wear and tear equipment and use products of new technologies of energy conservatioon techniques which can increase energy efficiency within the commercial building operation in order to remain competitive in operations. Energy conservation literature was reviewed and energy consumption techniques were implemented in a Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) headquarters building located at Lot 69, Section 57, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. In this study energy analysis and inefficient usage of energy was determined by tabulating energy consumption and expenditure by referring to previous monthly electricity bills, monitoring of power consumption by computing variables such as power factor value, reactive energy and harmonic contents using (HIOKI) power monitoring meters and degree of luminance by determining luminaires system lux value using (HIOKI) Lux meter. Analysis of the nergy data revealed that practical energy consumption programme technique can be implemented to alleviate inefficient energy usage and reduction in operating cost. The results showed that by retrofitting the existing luminaires system to the recommended parabolic mirror reflector (PMR) luminaires and replacong the conventional bulb 'EXIT' sign luminaires to light emitting diode (LED) technology, inefficient usage electrical energy can be reduced and will lead to cost saving. The power factor correction methods derived from the analysis of practical energy data indicated that internal energy transmission losses over power cable can be reduced and also improve power system distribution capacity. The wear and tear of the existing electric motor can be replaced with energy efficient motor based on the energy consumption data comparison analysis. Improving the power quality problem especially the harmonic contents in the power system can also reduce electrical energy transmission losses by correcting the non-linear current distorted waveform. The conclusion that can be drawn here is that the electrical energy conservation programme techniques are indeed able to reduce the electrical energy consumption as shown by cost saving calculations.

Despite recent improvements in energy efficiency being made in new build, it is important that the existing commercial building sector also take action to meet emission reduction targets. The objectives and challenges of such action will reduce the risk of the sector becoming obsolete due to high energy use and poor environmental performance. This book presents a theory-based, practice-support methodology to deal with sustainable retrofitting opportunities for existing commercial buildings in warm climates using bioclimatic design as the basis. The book has four main parts, focusing on eco-design and renovation, bioclimatic retrofitting, technological and behavioural change and case studies of retrofitting exemplars. In the first part, the context of climate change effects on design and renovation at the city scale is discussed. The second part looks at bioclimatic retrofitting as a 'design guide' for existing buildings, highlighting the significance of architectural design and engineering systems for energy performance. The technological and behavioural contexts of the existing building sector – policies, modelling, monitoring and trend analysis in respect to energy and environmental performance – are covered in part three. The final part gives some case studies showing the effectiveness of strategies suggested for effective environmental performance. This book is a must-have guide for all involved in the design and engineering of retrofitting projects in warm climates.

Cost-Effective Energy Efficient Building Retrofitting:Materials, Technologies, Optimization and Case Studies provides essential knowledge for civil engineers, architects, and other professionals working in the field of cost-effective energy efficient building retrofitting. The building sector is responsible for high energy consumption and its global demand is expected to grow as each day there are approximately 200,000 new inhabitants on planet Earth. The majority of electric energy will continue to be generated from the combustion of fossil fuels releasing not only carbon dioxide, but also methane and nitrous oxide. Energy efficiency measures are therefore crucial to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the building sector. Energy efficient building retrofitting needs to not only be technically feasible, but also economically viable. New building materials and advanced technologies already exist, but the knowledge to integrate all active components is still scarce and far from being widespread among building industry stakeholders. Emphasizes cost-effective methods for the refurbishment of existing buildings, presenting state-of-the-art technologies Includes detailed case studies that explain various methods and Net Zero Energy Explains optimal analysis and prioritization of cost effective strategies

Deep Energy Retrofit Guide For Public Buildings written by Rüdiger Lohse and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-10 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book provides detailed information on how to set up Deep Energy Retrofits (DERs) in public buildings, and shares in-depth insights into the current status of the major technologies, strategies and practical best practice examples of how to cost-effectively combine them. Case studies from Europe are analyzed with respect to energy use before and after renovation, reasons for undertaking the renovation, co-benefits achieved, resulting cost-effectiveness, and the business models employed. The building sector holds the potential for tremendous improvements in terms of energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, and energy retrofits to the existing building stock represent a significant opportunity in the transition to a low-carbon future. Moreover, investing in highly efficient building materials and systems can replace long-term energy imports, contribute to cost cutting, and create a wealth of new jobs. Yet, while the technologies needed in order to improve energy efficiency are readily available, significant progress has not yet been made, and “best practices” for implementing building technologies and renewable energy sources are still relegated to small “niche” applications. Offering essential information on Deep Energy Retrofits, the book offers a valuable asset for architects, public authorities, project developers, and engineers alike.

Whilst sustainability is already an important driver in the new building sector, this book explores how those involved in refurbishment of commercial building are moving this agenda forward. It includes chapters by developers, surveyors, cost consultants, architects, building physicists and other players, on the role they each can play in enabling refurbishment to be commercially, environmentally and socially sustainable. Case studies from northern climates show real examples of different building types, ages and uses and will demonstrate what action has been taken to create more sustainable buildings. The chapters raise and discuss all the relevant issues that need to be considered in retrofitting decision making. Changing standards, planning, process management, financing, technical issues, site organisation, commissioning and subsequent building management are all considered. The book demonstrates that buildings can be made comfortable to occupy, easy to manage and low in energy demand and environmental impact.

Retrofitting expresses, in a traditional approach, the process of improving something after it has been manufactured, constructed, or assembled. These systems integrate new technologies, new functions, and new services that increase the energy performance in existing private, public, and commercial buildings. Retrofitting for Optimal Energy Performance is a comprehensive reference source that examines environmentally conscious technologies and their applications in advancing retrofitting practices. Providing relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area, it highlights an array of topics such as climate change, energy management, and optimization modeling, and is essential for academicians, students, researchers, engineers, architects, entrepreneurs, managers, policymakers, and building owners.
