While the ‘spatial turn’ within the social sciences has already nurtured a broad discussion of the relation between society and space, little attention has so far been paid to the question of what we can learn about families when exploring space in its different facets. This book brings together international authors from the fields of sociology, human geography, and anthropology to support the development of space-sensitive and de-territorialised perspectives on the family that reach beyond classical concepts such as the ‘household’ or the ‘nuclear family’. Die Studie schließt an die Forderung nach entsprechenden empirischen Daten an und legt den Fokus auf konfessionslose Schülerinnen und Schüler: Was kennzeichnet das evangelische Profil aus ihrer Sicht? Wie erleben sie seine religiöse Dimension, wie erleben sie sich selbst im schulischen Rahmen als konfessionslos (wahrgenommen)? Auf Grundlage qualitativer Interviews werden typische Deutungsmuster aus wissenssoziologisch-diskursanalytischer Perspektive rekonstruiert und innerhalb eines Spektrums von Annäherung, Enthaltung und Distanzierung beschrieben. [In the »space of the search for understanding«: Interpretation patterns of non-denominational pupils as contributions to the Protestant school concept (not only) in East Germany] East Germany is one of the most secularised regions in the world. Nonetheless, numerous Protestant schools have been established there since the reunification. How do they realise their Christian orientation in a non-denominational context? The study follows up on the demand for corresponding empirical data and focuses on non-denominational pupils: What characterises the Protestant approach from their point of view? How do they experience its religious dimension? How do they experience themselves as non-denominational (perceived) in the school setting? Based on qualitative interviews, typical patterns of interpretation are reconstructed from a discourse-analytical perspective and described within a spectrum of advances, abstention and distancing.

This book introduces the novice reader to modern social theory through the creative exploration of eight major metaphors that have shaped Western understandings of human society. Rigney vividly yet concisely examines each major theoretical perspective in sociology, including functionalism, conflict theory, rational choice, and symbolic interactionism. He shows how each of these theories is rooted in a particular metaphorical tradition. Over decades and centuries, Rigney argues, social theorists have variously likened societies to organisms and living systems, to machines, battlefields, legal systems, marketplaces, games, theatrical productions, and discourses. Most interestingly, Rigney deftly shows how nearly all Western social theories fit with one or more of the metaphors. He emphasizes a humanistic understanding of society with an emphasis on the creative agency of social actors and communities.
