Education, Religion and Society celebrates the career of Professor John Hull, a leading figure in the transformation of religious education in English and Welsh schools, and co-founder of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values. He has also made major contributions to the theology of disability and the theological critique of the 'money culture'. Leading international scholars join together to offer a critical appreciation of his contribution to religious education and practical theology, and explore the continuing debate about the role of religious education in promoting international understanding, intercultural education and human rights. The contributors also deal with indoctrination, racism and relationship in Christian religious issues, and examine aspects of the theology of social exclusion and disability. This unique book includes a complete list of John Hull's writings up to the beginning of 2005 providing both an excellent introduction to contemporary issues of religious education in the West, and the most complete critical account yet of his work.

Herman Bavinck, the premier theologian of the Kuyper-inspired, neo-Calvinistic revival in the late-nineteenth-century Netherlands, is an important voice in the development of Protestant theology. Essays on Religion, Science, and Society is the capstone of his distinguished career. These seminal essays offer an outworking of Bavinck's systematic theology as presented in his Reformed Dogmatics and engage enduring issues from a biblical and theological perspective. The work presents his mature reflections on issues relating to ethics, education, politics, psychology, natural science and evolution, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion. This collection--Bavinck's most significant remaining untranslated work--is now available in English for the first time. Pastors, students, and scholars of Reformed theology will value this work.

Defining Religion written by Robert Cummings Neville and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-18 with Religion categories.

Provides a new orientation to philosophy of religion and a new theory of how religion ought to be defined. In this collection of essays, written over the past decade, Robert Cummings Neville addresses contemporary debates about the concept of religion and the importance of the comparative method in theology, while advancing and defending his own original definition of religion. Neville’s hypothesis is that religion is a cognitive, existential, and practical engagement of ultimate realities—five ultimate conditions of existence that need to be engaged by human beings. The essays, which range from formal articles to invited lectures, develop this hypothesis and explore its ramifications in religious experience, philosophical theology, religious studies, and the works of important thinkers in philosophy of religion. Defining Religion is an excellent introduction to Neville’s work, especially to the systematic philosophical theology presented in his magisterial three-volume set Philosophical Theology.

Analecta Bruxellensia has been since 1996 the annual review of the Protestant Faculties of Theology and Religious Studies (FUTP (French) and FPTR (Dutch)) in Brussels. Analecta 21 is a varied number. Three themes are developed covering exegetical, historical, sociological, theological and philosophical fields. The first explores hermeneutics related to the understanding and assimilation of the biblical text; the second addresses the weight of ideology in the construction of narratives invoked in the representation of the Other; the third pursues this theme of encounter and otherness in various historical perspectives. From a queer exegesis of the narrative of Acts 8 to the question of the extent of Christ's salvation in the hypothesis of inhabited worlds in science fiction literature, the eclecticism of these academic contributions, as well as their relevance to contemporary debates, promise the reader multiple changes of scenery and genuinely new thinking. This issue also includes a previously unpublished contribution by Paul Ricœur, a restitution of a three-speaker conference given in January 2000 on the theme of justice between ethics and law.

The Idea Of A Christian University written by Jeff Astley and has been published by Paternoster Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Catholic universities and colleges categories.

Today the academy is in a state of turmoil, torn apart by market-driven pressures, systematic underfunding by central government, overworked and highly stressed staff, increased student numbers and an ever widening division between research-led and teaching-led institutions. All this is a far cry from the religiously inspired ideals of Christian higher education which underpinned the foundation of so many centres of learning across the U. K., Europe, North America, and Australasia. In this timely and provocative collection of essays, scholars from across the world re-examine the idea of a Christian university and offer a radical alternative vision for the future of the academy. Theologians from Anglican, Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant traditions engage both with the historic roots from which the idea of the Christian University emerges and with the contemporary challenges and opportunities faced by higher education today. Contributors include Professor Sam Berry, Professor David Carr, Dr. Gavin D'Costa, Dr. Gerard Loughlin, Dr. Patricia Malone, Professor Ian Markham, Professor Adrian Thatcher and Dr. Elmer Thiessen.

Purity written by Andrew Brower Latz and has been published by James Clarke & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-31 with Religion categories.

In ancient societies and religion, the concept of purity was of central importance; in many modern societies it is either irrelevant or, when it is used, attached to extremely conservative agendas. This suggests an interesting story to be told within the history of ideas and, at the same time, raises questions about the place, meaning, and use of purity in religious traditions. What does purity mean in different scriptural contexts? Is it synonymous with holiness or different? How has it been used within various strands of theology? What should we make of it today? Have we moderns, by discarding purity as an organising social form, lost something essential or have we made a significant moral advance? Or both? This volume addresses these questions in essays on biblical genres, books and different theological traditions. Accessibly written and incisive in its scholarship, Purity will be of interest to both specialists and non-specialists alike.
