The meaning and mechanics of myth have been of constant concern inscholarship. Tales and legends challenge us to find a sense and purposeconcealed in their apparent nonsense and that challenge is met in thiscompanion volume to Kewa Tales. Describing eighty tales, theauthor explains how they are fabricated from recurrent narrativesequences, logical structures, and aesthetic metaphors. To do so, hedraws on the formalism of Propp, the structuralism of Levi-Strauss, andwritings on poetics and metaphor. But, holding tales to be mirrors ormodels for daily life, he also demonstrates an intimate connectionbetween narrative structure and ethnographic settings.

Merging anecdote and biography, autobiography and interviews, fact and fiction and a characteristically eclectic selection of music, David Toop spirals us through the 20th century's guilty fascination with exotica. Notions of the exotic have long inspired musicians across the musical spectrum, from classical to ?easy listening? to rap - from Stravinsky to the Boo-Yah T.R.I.B.E. Exotica takes a look at some of the world's most witty, experimental and adventurous sound recordings while taking in the work of Les Baxter, the meaning of Carmen Miranda, leopard skin leotards, pink fluffy cubicles, elevator music, and more... Painstakingly researched and brilliantly insightful, Exotica includes interviews with Burt Bacharach, Ornette Coleman, Bill Laswell, YMO's Haroumi Hosono, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and The Boo-Yah Tribe.

Invented History Fabricated Power written by Barry Wood and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-16 with History categories.

Invented History, Fabricated Power begins with an examination of prehistoric beliefs (in spirits, souls, mana, orenda) that provided personal explanation and power through ritual and shamanism among tribal peoples. On this foundation, spiritual power evolved into various kinds of divine sanction for kings and emperors (Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indian, Chinese and Japanese). As kingships expanded into empires, fictional histories and millennia-long genealogies developed that portrayed imperial superiority and greatness. Supernatural events and miracles were attached to religious founders (Hebrew, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic). A unique variation developed in the Roman Church which fabricated papal power through forgeries in the first millennium CE and the later “doctrine of discovery” which authorized European domination and conquest around the world during the Age of Exploration. Elaborate fabrications continued with epic histories and literary cycles from the Persians, Ethiopians, Franks, British, Portuguese, and Iroquois Indians. Both Marxists and Nazis created doctrinal texts which passed for economic or political explanations but were in fact self-aggrandizing narratives that eventually collapsed. The book ends with the idealistic goals of the current liberal democratic way of life, pointing to its limitations as a sustaining narrative, along with numerous problems threatening its viability over the long term.

Thomas Sheehan and Richard E. Palmer The materials translated in the body of this volume date from 1927 through 1931. The Encyclopaedia Britannica Article and the Amsterdam Lectures were written by Edmund Hussed (with a short contribution by Martin Heideg ger) between September 1927 and April 1928, and Hussed's marginal notes to Sein und Zeit and Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik were made between 1927 and 1929. The appendices to this volume contain texts from both Hussed and Heidegger, and date from 1929 through 1931. As a whole these materials not only document Hussed's thinking as he approached retirement and emeri tus status (March 31, 1928) but also shed light on the philosophical chasm that was widening at that time between Hussed and his then colleague and protege, Martin Heidegger. 1. The Encyclopaedia Britannica Article Between September and early December 1927, Hussed, under contract, composed an introduction to phenomenology that was to be published in the fourteenth edition ofthe Encyclopaedia Britannica (1929). Hussed's text went through four versions (which we call Drafts A, B, C, and D) and two editorial condensations by other hands (which we call Drafts E and F). Throughout this volume those five texts as a whole are referred to as "the EB Article" or simply "the Article. " Hussed's own final version of the Article, Draft D, was never published of it appeared only in 1962.

Information Society written by Karamjit S. Gill and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

Human-centredness: A Challenge to Post-industrial Europe? The key power in industrial society has been linked to the possession of capital and factory. In the "information society" it could be rather different. If one accepts that that the key power in the information society will be linked not so much to the ownership of information but to human creativity nourished by that information, the productive force of today and tomorrow, could be more and more the human brain. Making use of one's intelligence is always accompanied by positive emotion, which in turn further activates the intelligence. But, unfortunately, under present conditions workers of all levels live in fear, anxiety and stress rather than desire and motivation. The question of "basic human ecology" (quality of life) is, therefore, a major strategic factor. It is precisely the opposite to the mechanisms of exclusion that currently dominate our society: exclusion of young people through joblessness - but also exclusion through technology, as with the helplessness of older people or the poorly educated confronted with ticket dispensing machines or other automats. This is not idle theorizing, it corresponds to concrete facts. It is, for example, how some observers interpret the crisis at IBM. Because its programs were less 'human-friendly', it was shaken to its foundations by Apple and Microsof- though it seems since to have learnt its lesson.
