From the author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia--vital help for the millions of people suffering from pain, fatigue, and sleep problems. Recent studies indicate that 3 to 6 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia--a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. This terrible condition is often accompanied by chronic fatigue syndrome, a persistent and debilitating sense of exhaustion that is estimated to affect 800,000 Americans--twice the number of people with multiple sclerosis. Yet there are no official blood tests of diagnostic procedures that can confirm that yes, you definitely have these conditions, and in fact, a whole segment of the medical world doesn't even believe these two diseases actually exist. In addition, the few books that are on the market tend to focus on single solutions or eschew conventional and pharmaceutical approaches, which could alienate readers who use conventional medicine in whole or part. In her trademark accessible, easy-to-follow style, patient advocate Mary J. Shomon integrates the latest findings regarding these misunderstood conditions. Highlighting the pros and cons of the antibiotic, metabolic/endocrine, hormonal, musculoskeletal, and many other approaches to treatment, Shomon explores the fads and viable alternatives--both conventional and alternative--and provides helpful, clear solutions to help sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. At various points since 1995, Mary J. Shomon has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Since then, she has transformed her health challenges into a mission as a nationally-known patient advocate. She has worked for more than 20 years in writing, advertising, public relations, and communications and is the founder and editor-in-chief of several thyroid, autoimmune, and nutrition newsletters, as well as the internet's most popular thyroid disease website, www.thyroid-info.com.

This book was written for patients who suffer from fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions. I believe members of the medical community will also benefit from the book's content. As a Dartmouth Rheumatology Fellowship trained Board Certified Rheumatologist, I have been treating patients with these conditions for over 20 years. The vast majority of my private medical practice consists of patients with fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions. Throughout the years (through my patients) I have learned how to medically manage patients who suffer from chronic painful conditions. Even with all of the magnificent advances in medicine, people who suffer from fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions remain an underserved and disenfranchised component of the medical community. This should not be the case. My philosophy is that ?nobody? should have to suffer and live with chronic pain on a daily basis. This is unnecessary. There are all types of appropriate cost effective medications (generics) which are available to treat all kinds of painful conditions. The problem that patients with chronic painful conditions face is their ability to get to the right type of doctor who will not only embrace their problem, but manage their pain effectively. I systematically approach the concepts of fibromyalgia, the manifestations of this condition and other chronic painful processes, and I review available medications and their modes of actions. I explain why certain medications should be effective, and why others will not be helpful. I discuss the concept of ?off-labeling? a medication (using a medication beyond its FDA indication) for the management of fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions; the key concept to my success in managing these patients throughout the years. I focus on how one needs to begin their journey on finding the right doctor to help them with their problem. There are plenty of physicians, out there, who know how to effectively treat these conditions. This book will help the reader to streamline the process. This is not a how-to book. The reader will become better adept at communicating with their doctor, which will help to facilitate maximal effective pain management.

Encounters With The Invisible written by Dorothy Wall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Chronic fatigue syndrome categories.

While news stories tout the successes of molecular science, gene mapping, and high-tech interventions to treat disease, there’s another, untold story within today’s medical landscape. It is the story of the growing number of chronic, controversial illnesses--chronic fatigue syndrome, Gulf War syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity--poorly served by today’s biomedical, pathogen-oriented approach to disease. With a lyric, incisive voice, Dorothy Wall blends the personal story of her struggles with CFS with a graphic sketch of the CFS terrain: the woeful federal response, patient advocacy politics, medical debates, environmental questions. Eighteen chapters explore a spectrum of issues. "Listening” conveys the impact on a patient when medical practitioners are deaf to her story, and posits listening as a moral act. "That Name” leaps into the minefield of controversy between and among patient advocacy groups, researchers, and the medical establishment over the power to define, name, and legitimize disease. "The Erotics of Illness” pulls readers to the intimate core of illness, with its upheavals, pain, and tenuous pleasure. "Staying Home” explores the meanings of enclosure for women and the struggle to find purpose and meaning in a reduced, homebound life. Personal drama merges with literary reflection, reportage, and medical history. An important investigation of what many are calling "postmodern” illness, Encounters with the Invisible offers a thought-provoking look at a controversial illness and the challenge to biomedicine it presents.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common condition that is associated with oftentimes debilitating chronic widespread pain, severe fatigue, poor sleep, mental fogginess (often called fibro fog) and several other symptoms. It can come on at any age, even during childhood. It affects up to one in ten women and one in sixty men over the course of their lifetime. An estimated 6 million Americans and 600, 000 Canadians suffer from this disease, and perhaps 100 million worldwide. However, roughly one in four family doctors and one in eight pain specialists believe that FM patients are faking their symptoms, and that FM doesn't even exist. Critics have called fibromyalgia "the disease with no clothes, " "the syndrome of feeling out of sorts, " and "a fabrication of the North American court system." Breaking Thru the Fibro Fog is the first and only book of its kind. It examines all the arguments against fibromyalgia, and reviews the published scientific evidence refuting each and every one of them.
