Tijdens de Duitse bezetting waren er in Nederland vijf concentratiekampen: Schoorl, Amersfoort, Ommen, Vught en Westerbork, het voorportaal van Auschwitz. De voormalige kampen Amersfoort, Vught en Westerbork zijn nu nationale herinneringscentra. Dit is geen vanzelfsprekende zaak, maar het resultaat van een moeizaam maar dynamisch en conflictrijk proces tussen verschillende belanghebbenden. Vanuit cultuurhistorisch perspectief onderzoekt Roel Hijink de manier waarop de publieke herinnering aan de Duitse concentratiekampen in Nederland op hun historische locatie vorm heeft gekregen. Hij beschrijft de vormen die men hiervoor in opeenvolgende periodes heeft gebruikt en analyseert wat men nu eigenlijk precies wilde herinneren met en uitdrukken in die vormen.
