Traditional, secular, and fundamentalist--all three categories are contested, yet in their contestation, they shape our sensibilities and are mutually implicated, the one with the others. This interplay brings to the foreground more than ever the question of what it means to think and live as Tradition. The Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century, in particular, have emphasized Tradition not as a dead letter but as a living presence of the Holy Spirit. But how can we discern Tradition as living discernment from fundamentalism? What does it mean to live in Tradition when surrounded by something like the "secular"? These essays interrogate these mutual implications, beginning from the understanding that whatever secular or fundamentalist may mean, they are not Tradition, which is historical, particularistic, in motion, ambiguous and pluralistic, but simultaneously not relativistic.

Fidelity Without Fundamentalism written by Gerard J. Hughes and has been published by Paulist Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Philosophy categories.

"As religious believers feel themselves more threatened by the modern world, they increasingly often turn to fundamentalism. The fundamentalist insists that engaging with contemporary culture ends in the watering down of Christianity to suit the passing whims of the age. Yet Gerard J. Hughes argues in Fidelity without Fundamentalism that in fact being a faithful Christian involves avoiding fundamentalism. Believers are sometimes encouraged to sweep under the carpet issues which it is thought they should be protected from for fear they might undermine their faith. The longer-term effect of this is not to preserve their faith, but to corrode it."--Publisher's description.

Fundamentalism Sectarianism And Revolution written by S. N. Eisenstadt and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Religion categories.

Fundamentalism, Sectarianism, and Revolution is a major comparative analysis of fundamentalist movements in cultural and political context, with an emphasis on the contemporary scene. Leading sociologist S. N. Eisenstadt examines the meaning of the global rise of fundamentalism as one very forceful contemporary response to tensions in modernity and the dynamics of civilization. He compares modern fundamentalist movements with the proto-fundamentalist movements which arose in the 'axial civilizations' in pre-modern times; he shows how the great revolutions in Europe which arose in connection with these movements shaped the political and cultural programmes of modernity; and he contrasts post-Second World War Moslem, Jewish and Protestant fundamentalist movements with communal national movements, notably in Asia. The central theme of the book is the distinctively Jacobin features of fundamentalist movements and their ambivalent attitude to tradition: above all their attempts to essentialize tradition in an ideologically totalistic way. Eisenstadt has won the Amalfi book prize.
