This work sheds new light on fundamental aspects of phase separation in polymer-blend thin films. A key feature underlying the theoretical models is the unification of one-dimensional thermodynamic phase equilibria with film evolution phenomena in two- and three dimensions. Initially, an established 'phase portrait' method, useful for visualising and calculating phase equilibria of polymer-blend films, is generalised to systems without convenient simplifying symmetries. Thermodynamic equilibria alone are then used to explain a film roughening mechanism in which laterally coexisting phases can have different depths in order to minimise free energy. The phase portraits are then utilised to demonstrate that simulations of lateral phase separation via a transient wetting layer, which conform very well with experiments, can be satisfactorily explained by 1D phase equilibria and a 'surface bifurcation' mechanism. Lastly, a novel 3D model of coupled phase separation and dewetting is developed, which demonstrates that surface roughening shadows phase separation in thin films.

Since their discovery in 1977, the evolution of conducting polymers has revolutionized modern science and technology. These polymers enjoy a special status in the area of materials science yet they are not as popular among young readers or common people when compared to other materials like metals, paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, ceramics and composites like concrete. Most importantly, much of the available literature in the form of papers, specific review articles and books is targeted either at advanced readers (scientists/technologists/engineers/senior academicians) or for those who are already familiar with the topic (doctoral/postdoctoral scholars). For a beginner or even school/college students, such compilations are bit difficult to access/digest. In fact, they need proper introduction to the topic of conducting polymers including their discovery, preparation, properties, applications and societal impact, using suitable examples and already known principles/knowledge/phenomenon. Further, active participation of readers in terms of “question & answers”, “fill-in-the-blanks”, “numerical” along with suitable answer key is necessary to maintain the interest and to initiate the “thought process”. The readers also need to know about the drawbacks and any hazards of such materials. Therefore, I believe that a comprehensive source on the science/technology of conducting polymers which maintains a link between grass root fundamentals and state-of-the-art R&D is still missing from the open literature.

Phase separation in polymer blends has achieved a tremendous techno-commercial importance. Most of the applications of polymer blends, such as tissue engineering, membrane technology, electromagnetic shielding, energy harvesting, structural materials, packaging, smart multiphase polymer coatings, depend on the morphologies developed during processing. This book outlines the fundamental aspects of polymer blend thermodynamics, the state-of-the-art processing techniques for specific polymer blend systems currently in use, and the design and fabrication of multiphasic polymeric materials, which will present a multiplicity of opportunities in the water remediation, packaging, and electronic industries, to mention a few. It emphasizes recent research developments, processing techniques, characterization methods, factors influencing phase separation temperature in phase-separated, including partially miscible, polymer blends, and key research challenges in the development of phase-separated polymers materials. With unique and systematic coverage of the journey from fundamentals to applications in polymer blends, this book is ideal for polymer scientists and engineers, material scientists, researchers, engineers, and under- and post-graduate students who are interested in this exciting field of research. It will help industrial researchers and R&D managers bring advanced phase-separated polymer materials/products to the market.

In science as well as in industry, the impetus of research on bio-based polymers has recently expanded into new terrains. The need to replace fossil-based materials with sustainable and renewable sources is one of the main drivers for the emergence and the development of new and environmentally friendly materials. While some materials applications of bio-based polymers are already very well established, for instance, in paper and textiles, others have just emerged with thin films and coatings being a recent and particular area of interest. Thin films in general are an enormous field of research both fundamentally and from an applied perspective, with uses ranging from corrosion resistance to photovoltaics and sensors. Since bio-based materials are a relatively novel source material for thin films, the research in this area is at a fresh, exciting stage at the moment.

Nanolithography And Patterning Techniques In Microelectronics written by D Bucknall and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-30 with Science categories.

Techniques such as surface patterning have facilitated the emergence of advanced polymers with applications in areas such as microelectronics. Surface patterning of polymers has conventionally been undertaken by optical lithography. However, a new generation of nanolithographic and patterning techniques has made it possible to develop complex patterns at the nanoscale. Non-conventional lithography and patterning summarises this new range of techniques and their industrial applications. A number of chapters look at ways of forming and modifying surfaces for patterning. These are complemented by chapters on particular patterning techniques such as soft lithography, ion beam patterning, the use of nanostencils, photolithography and inkjet printing. The book also discusses prototyping and the manufacture of particular devices. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Non-conventional lithography and patterning is a standard reference for both those researching and using advanced polymers in such areas as microelectronics and biomedical devices. Looks at alternative approaches used to develop complex patterns at the nanoscale Concentrates on state of the art nanolithographic methods Written by a distinguished international team of contributors

This book has emerged out of our long-time research interests on the topic of latex film formation. Over the years we have built up a repertoire of slides used in conference presentations, short courses and tutorials on the topic. The story presented in this book has thereby taken shape as it has been told and re-told to a mix of academic and industrial audiences. The book presents a wide body of work accumulated by the polymer colloids community over the past five decades, but the selection of examples has been flavoured by our particular experimental interests and development of mathematical models. We intend the book to be a starting point for academic and industrial scientists beginning research on latex film formation. The emphasis is on fundam- tal mechanisms, however, and not on applications nor on specific effects of formu- tions. We hope that the book consolidates the understanding that has been achieved to-date in the literature in a more comprehensive way than is possible in a review article. We trust that the reader will appreciate the fascination of the topic.
