In 1820 publiceerden de jonggestorven dichters Keats en Shelley allebei hun laatste en beste bundel. Toen Keats een jaar later aan de tering gestorven was, schreef Shelley een befaamd gedicht als in memoriam; nog een jaar later kwam hijzelf om bij een schipbreuk. De beide bundels en de lijkzang vormen de inhoud van dit boek. Keats bundel Lamia, Isabella, Agnietenavond en andere gedichten is minder beroemd om de in de titel genoemde gedichten dan om het lange fragment `Hyperion en om de vijf odes (aan een nachtegaal, op een Grieks mengvat, aan Psyche, aan de herfst en aan de neerslachtigheid), die evenzoveel hoogtepunten van de Engelse poëzie uitmaken. Shelleys Prometheus ontketend, een lyrisch drama in vier bedrijven, met andere gedichten bevat een toneelstuk dat misschien onspeelbaar is, maar dat wel een staalkaart biedt van zijn revolutionaire denken én van zijn poëtische genie. Bij de andere gedichten zijn klassiekers als `Ode aan de westenwind , `De wolk en `Aan een leeuwerik . Adonaïs, een elegie op de dood van John Keats bevat een aantal strofen die den treuren uit zijn afgedrukt in overlijdensadvertenties. Maar wie het geheel leest, merkt algauw dat Shelley juist wars is van elk cliché.

Among his more famous poems are 'Ode to a Nightingale', 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' and 'Sleep and Poetry.
