For centuries seafaring people thought that the presence of women on board would mean bad luck: rough weather, shipwreck, and other disasters were sure to follow. Because of these beliefs and prejudices women were supposedly excluded from the maritime domain. In the field of maritime history too, the ship and the sea have predominantly been perceived as a space for men. This volume of the Yearbook of Women’s History challenges these notions. It asks: to what extent were the sea and the ship ever male-dominated and masculine spaces? How have women been part of seafaring communities, maritime undertakings, and maritime culture? How did gender notions impact life on board and vice versa? From a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume moves from Indonesia to the Faroe Islands, from the Mediterranean to Newfoundland; bringing to light the presence of women and the workings of gender on sailing, whaling, steam, cruise, passenger, pirate, and navy ships. As a whole it demonstrates the diversity and the agency of women at sea from ancient times to the present day.

The purpose of the study described herein is to measure and observe factors hypothesized to be associated with the integration process. Of particular interest are certain personal interactions that are believed to occur in a skewed organization. Four ships were given the preintegration form of the Navy in Transition Survey. One of these ships was resurveyed 9 months after integration. In addition, Navy reservists collected observational data aboard six ships. Responses to the preintegration and postintegration surveys were analyzed to determine how attitudes were affected by gender, age, education, pay grade, ship, and shipboard department. The attitudes measured in the preintegration survey were highly related to both the individual and organizational variables of interest. Although nonrated men held the most traditional beliefs about women's roles in the workplace, they liked working with women more than they did any other group. On the postintegration survey, petty officers were the least positive of any group about the success of integration. Department effects were also evident. Women felt more performance pressure than men and experienced more problems aboard ship.

It also gives first-hand accounts from women seafarers describing how they have dealt with discrimination, sexual harassment, parental disapproval and an array of other difficulties. The study examines the practices and policies of national and international regulatory agencies, employers, trade unions, and maritime education institutions. A series of recommendations that may further help the integration of women into shipboard communities is included.

Since the First World War the spaces and zones within which submarines and aircraft have operated have been a major part of military activity. At the same time, air and sea have been associated with the visions and practices of civilian technological conquests. Both the military and civilian conquering of the depths of the sea and the 'third dimension' have been marked by the creation of myths, which show fascinating similarities and contrasts. These phenomena have been more or less explicitly determined by gender constructions and semantics as well as by discourses of nationalism, technology and modernity. The article of this volume are concerned with British and German narratives, legends and mythemes that intertwine in different ways to shape memory and practices of remembrance, through which military and civil matters, hopes and fears overlap and blend together. They address the tangible effects that the military conquest of new regions produce on civil life, and conversely also reveal the controversies contained within that which is forgotten, suppressed, and does not wish to be known about the militarization of spaces, environments and technologies. The articles bring these different aspects into focus, and on these bases they are organized into three sections: national competition, the meanings ascribed to space or spaces, and remembrance and memory politics within popular and official culture. engl.

Iron Men Wooden Women written by Margaret S. Creighton and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-05 with History categories.

From the voyage of the Argonauts to the Tailhook scandal, seafaring has long been one of the most glaringly male-dominated occupations. In this groundbreaking interdisciplinary study, Margaret Creighton, Lisa Norling, and their co-authors explore the relationship of gender and seafaring in the Anglo-American age of sail. Drawing on a wide range of American and British sources—from diaries, logbooks, and account ledgers to songs, poetry, fiction, and a range of public sources—the authors show how popular fascination with seafaring and the sailors' rigorous, male-only life led to models of gender behavior based on "iron men" aboard ship and "stoic women" ashore. Yet Iron Men, Wooden Women also offers new material that defies conventional views. The authors investigate such topics as women in the American whaling industry and the role of the captain's wife aboard ship. They explore the careers of the female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, as well as those of other women—"transvestite heroines"—who dressed as men to serve on the crews of sailing ships. And they explore the importance of gender and its connection to race for African American and other seamen in both the American and the British merchant marine. Contributors include both social historians and literary critics: Marcus Rediker, Dianne Dugaw, Ruth Wallis Herndon, Haskell Springer, W. Jeffrey Bolster, Laura Tabili, Lillian Nayder, and Melody Graulich, in addition to Margaret Creighton and Lisa Norling.
