This monumental work features the most important German philosophers, jurists, pedagogues, literary critics, doctors, historians, and others whose work has philosophical significance who lived and wrote in the eighteenth century, covering the period between 1701 and 1801. The Dictionary includes work by philosophers whose mother tongue was German, were published in German or who lived in Germany for an extended period of time. Since historic borders are different from today's, the Dictionary includes authors born or who lived in places such as Strasbourg, Danzig, Koenisberg, or Austria. Swiss philosophers are also covered. These philosophers published in German, Latin, French, and Hebrew. Since German philosophy cannot be understood without the influence of French and English philosophers, the work also includes translators and editors. Each entry aims to give the reader insight into the philosophers' life and contribution to the world of thought. Bibliographical references will help with further research. The entries include a biographical sketch, analysis of doctrines with emphasis on historical context, subsequent influences, and bibliography of further works and secondary literature.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg, language: English, abstract: For centuries, language has been shaped by circumstances not only of great importance but also in accordance with the strength of resonance it has had with men. They encompass social and historical events as well as innovations of thinking, which can be understood as a product of persistence and the will to evolve as intelligent beings. Thereby, it has generated the coinage of lexical items in particular areas of a language and, furthermore, leading to influencing foreign languages through language contact. English as the world’s most widely spoken language is a thesaurus of a range of philosophical German etymons as well as borrowings that have made their way into the English lexicon. The Age of Enlightenment as the turning point of the independent use of reason introduced a scientific revolution in Europe, which was to explain the natural world by promoting philosophy. The remarkable influence of philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) within Idealism in the eighteenth century is noticeable within the set of new meanings to already existing vocabulary, and also sets the terms for much of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Others include Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), the founder of phenomenology, and Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), two important German philosophers of the twentieth century, which had a major impact on new lexical items. In addition, Heidegger, as the chief leader of new compounds, introduced a special vocabulary of his own. This study examines the German philosophy and its impact on the English language over the centuries. There will be some lexical items which are rather frequently used in an everyday life context, and others which up to this time may appear rather unknown to the English speaker. In some cases there will be a more detailed analysis of the given lexical item owing to the specific usages and, also subsequently, to their varying meaning.

Characters in some languages, particularly Hebrew and Arabic, may not display properly due to device limitations. Transliterations of terms appear before the representations in foreign characters. This is an encyclopedic dictionary of close to 400 important philosophical, literary, and political terms and concepts that defy easy—or any—translation from one language and culture to another. Drawn from more than a dozen languages, terms such as Dasein (German), pravda (Russian), saudade (Portuguese), and stato (Italian) are thoroughly examined in all their cross-linguistic and cross-cultural complexities. Spanning the classical, medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary periods, these are terms that influence thinking across the humanities. The entries, written by more than 150 distinguished scholars, describe the origins and meanings of each term, the history and context of its usage, its translations into other languages, and its use in notable texts. The dictionary also includes essays on the special characteristics of particular languages--English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Originally published in French, this one-of-a-kind reference work is now available in English for the first time, with new contributions from Judith Butler, Daniel Heller-Roazen, Ben Kafka, Kevin McLaughlin, Kenneth Reinhard, Stella Sandford, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Jane Tylus, Anthony Vidler, Susan Wolfson, Robert J. This glossary contains approximately 1000 Russian philosophical terms, arranged in Russian alphabetical order, numbered and followed by English, German and French equivalents. The terms chosen are (a) those having a specific meaning in Soviet philosophy (e.g. zakony dialektiky) ; (b) central terms appearing in Russian philosophical texts (e.g. poznanie); (c) terms regularly appearing in Russian philosophical texts, being in different degrees necessary to the expression of philosophical thought (e.g. orudie, svet, etc.). There are relatively clear criteria as to what terms belong to group (a); for (b) and even more for (c) the criteria are of course extremely vague. The limited selection that had to be made in such a brief glossary, is due to the experience and reading of the author and of those who were kind enough to collaborate. The main object of this work is to facilitate the study of Soviet phi losophy - a study which necessarily begins with the learning of the technical language involved. This is why a star-system was applied to the numbered list of Russian expressions. A * indicates an expression having a special meaning or being central in Soviet philosophy. This will help the student to first acquire the most basic vocabulary. The central list of expressions is followed by indexes in English, German and French. In these indexes, each expression is followed by one or several numbers, which refer to the numbered list of Russian expressions. Thus, the indexes provide for easy cross-reference.
