Die Familienbilder bzw. die Zusammenlebensformen, die es heute gibt, sind keine festgelegten einer früheren Zeit, sondern von Anbeginn der Menschheit hat sich die Familie aufgrund ihres geschichtlichen und gesellschaftlichen Kontextes weiterentwickelt. Egal welche Zeit man betrachtet, stets gab es zentrale Werte und Muster für eine Familie. Hinsichtlich des familiären Wandels stellt sich daher die Frage, was dieser für die moderne Familie bedeutet. Welche Werte, Normen und Verhaltensweise ehemaliger Familienformen treten auch heute noch in Erscheinung, mit welchen Neuerungen wird die Familie konfrontiert und wie geht sie mit diesen verschiedenen Situationen um? Ferner muss untersucht werden welche Gefahren daraus hervorgehen und wie der Ausblick für die nächste Generation aussieht. Bietet der gesellschaftliche Wandel Orientierungspunkte, nach denen man sich auch im Zeitalter der Postmoderne richten kann, oder löst sich die Institution Familie immer weiter auf?

In ten brilliant essays, Jan Assmann explores the connections between religion, culture, and memory. Building on Maurice Halbwachs's idea that memory, like language, is a social phenomenon as well as an individual one, he argues that memory has a cultural dimension too. He develops a persuasive view of the life of the past in such surface phenomena as codes, religious rites and festivals, and canonical texts on the one hand, and in the Freudian psychodrama of repressing and resurrecting the past on the other. Whereas the current fad for oral history inevitably focuses on the actual memories of the last century or so, Assmann presents a commanding view of culture extending over five thousand years. He focuses on cultural memory from the Egyptians, Babylonians, and the Osage Indians down to recent controversies about memorializing the Holocaust in Germany and the role of memory in the current disputes between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East and between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland.

Väter heute wollen mehr sein als nur finanzielle Ernährer und Verantwortung auch bei der direkten Fürsorgearbeit ihrer Kinder übernehmen. Ungeachtet dieses egalitären Anspruchs überwiegt in den meisten Familien in Deutschland allerdings eine überwiegend traditionelle Aufteilung von Erwerbs- und Familienarbeit. Auf einer explorativen Spurensuche nach den „neuen Vätern“ beleuchtet Johanna Possinger Gründe für diese Lücke zwischen Wunsch und Wirklichkeit und widmet sich der in der Familienforschung noch unzureichend beantworteten Frage, wie sich Väter während, aber auch unabhängig von der Elternzeit an der Fürsorgearbeit für ihre Kinder beteiligen.
