Ann-Christin Renneberg spürt die Einflussfaktoren auf, die gesundheitliche Ungleichheit zwischen Alleinerziehenden auf der einen und Paarmüttern auf der anderen Seite verursachen, und zwar im europäischen Vergleich. Sie legt dabei besonderes Augenmerk auf die Determinanten, die mit der Arbeitsmarktintegration der Mütter in Zusammenhang stehen. Unter Nutzung von Daten aus dem European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) und von Makroindikatoren bringt Renneberg individuelle und strukturelle Erklärungsfaktoren in einer Mehrebenenanalyse zusammen. Hierbei zeigt sich auf der Mikroebene die Relevanz der Ressourcen zur Erklärung gesundheitlicher Ungleichheit zwischen Müttern sowie auf der Makroebene die Bedeutsamkeit des Gesundheitssystems und der Kinderbetreuung. Dabei können Alleinerziehende allerdings je nach Land auf eine stark unterschiedliche Ressourcenausstattung zurückgreifen. Unerwarteterweise sind zeitliche Belastungen für Alleinerziehende nicht zwangsläufig von Nachteil, wie Renneberg ermittelt hat. Aus ihren Analysen lässt sich ableiten, dass die Gesundheit der Mütter insbesondere durch eine bessere Abstimmung einerseits wohlfahrtsstaatlicher und andererseits betrieblicher Maßnahmen erheblich verbessert werden und so zu einer Reduktion von gesundheitlicher Ungleichheit beigetragen werden könnte. Das Buch richtet sich an am Thema Interessierte, an Studierende, Lehrende und Forschende, die sich mit sozialer und gesundheitlicher Ungleichheit, Wohlfahrtsstaats-, Arbeitsmarkt- und Familiensoziologie beschäftigen.

In post-industrial societies more and more people earn an income in creative knowledge work, a highly flexible labour market segment that demands a geographically mobile workforce. Creative knowledge work is based on an understanding of language, culture and symbolic meanings. This can best be obtained through local and national embeddedness. Yet, this necessity for embeddedness stands in contrast to the demand in geographical mobility. How is this contradiction solved by individuals? What new forms of place attachment does this bring about? This book introduces a showcase of 25 multilocal creative knowledge workers, who live in different countries at the same time. It investigates how continuous mobility becomes part of their lifeworld, and how it changes their feelings of belonging and practices of place attachment. Applying an innovative methodological mix of social phenomenology, hermeneutics and mental mapping, this book takes a detailed look at biographies and the role of places in mobile lifeworlds. Plug&Play Places brings forth the idea that places have to be understood as individual items, which are configured and then plugged into the ‘system’ of the own lifeworld. They can be ‘played’ without great effort once an individual needs to make use of them. This new type of place attachment is a form of subjective standardization of place, which complements the well-known models of objective standardization of places. Plug&Play Places is relevant for scientists who deal with mobility and its impact on individual lifeworlds, with transnational multilocality and with flexibilized labour markets. Furthermore, the book provides a detailed qualitative perspective which can enrich the explanations of quantitative research in the same field. It is an interesting reading also for practitioners engaged in urban planning, housing and real estate development. Robert Nadler holds a doctoral degree in Urban and Local European Studies from the University of Milan-Bicocca. He is a researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography and published on creative industries, multilocality and labour mobility.

This book traces the evolution of climate change research, which, long dominated by the natural sciences, now sees greater involvement with disciplines studying the socio-cultural implications of change. In their introduction, the editors chart the changing role of the social and cultural sciences, delineating three strands of research: socio-critical approaches which connect climate change to a call for cultural or systemic change; a mitigation and adaption strand which takes the physical reality of climate change as a starting point, and focuses on the concerns of climate change-affected communities and their participation in political action; and finally, culture-sensitive research which places emphasis on indigenous peoples, who contribute the least to the causes of climate change, who are affected most by its consequences, and who have the least leverage to influence a solution. This book provides the first systematic comparative analysis of climate security discourses. It analyses the securitisation of climate change in four different countries: USA, Germany, Turkey, and Mexico. The empirical analysis traces how specific climate-security discourses have become dominant, which actors have driven this process, what political consequences this has had and what role the broader context has played in enabling these specific securitisations. In doing so, the book outlines a new and systematic theoretical framework that distinguishes between different referent objects of securitisation (territorial, individual and planetary) and between a security and risk dimension. It thereby clarifies the ever-increasing literature on different forms of securitisation and the relationship between security, risk and politics. Whereas securitisation studies have traditionally focused on either a single country case study or a global overview, consequently failing to reconstruct detailed securitisation dynamics, this is the first book to provide a systematic comparative analysis of climate security discourses in four countries and thus closes an empirical gap in the present literature. The International Section on Machine and System Safety was founded in 1975 to deal with questions on occupational risks in this ?eld at the inter- tional level. It is a member of the Special Commission on Prevention of the International Social Security Association (ISSA). The Special Commission is a body within ISSA that focuses on work-related risks. It has 11 inter- tional Sections as members. ISSA was founded in 1927 with its headquarters in Geneva. It is working worldwide in over 150 countries with nearly 370 member institutions from all ?elds of social security. TheSection on Machine and System Safety, when it was founded, had its focus on machine safety, particularly on the ma- facturing of safe machinery, on assisting developing countries to be able to buy safe used machinery, and on delivering clear operating instructions. Our members and partners are: • institutions for safety and health at work; • insurance companies dealing with work-related risks; • research institutions; and • various enterprises, e.g. manufacturers, importers and users of machines and systems/installations. We thus bring together the experiences of our members and partners. The role of the operators soon grew in importance, and their capability for ha- ling machinery became an important factor for the safety and success of enterprises. The growing importance and complexity of handling different man-machine-environment situations created new challenges and led to - larging the Section’s tasks to machine and system safety.
