This book traces three decades of securitization in Angola. As a governing strategy during war and peacetime, it muted the aspirations of those on opposing sides, distorted the state, emboldened elites and redefined the identity of Angolans. Through this lens, Paula Cristina Roque provides an original account of Angola's post-conflict state-building. Securitization protected the interests of President dos Santos, the ruling MPLA party and the elites supporting the regime. Angola's array of security forces and infrastructure provided an alternative to a fully functioning executive, at national, provincial and local levels. The intrusive way in which any form of dissent or activism was crushed allowed the presidency to control the direction and narrative of the post-war years. But the facade of democracy, development and stability hid a very different reality for the majority of Angolans, who remained poor, disenfranchised and marginalized. Roque explores the inner workings of the intelligence services, army and presidential guard, explaining the trajectory of a survivalist and fearful regime presiding over scarcities and injustices. She shows that the survival of national security and governing elites was the highest priority. The 'shadows' held far more power than institutions, and weakened them-widening the gap between government and governed.

This book uncovers the activities of clandestine governments. It explores how covert political activity and transnational organised crime are linked - and how they ultimately work to the advantage of state and corporate power. Using a variety of case studies, from the mafia in Italy to programmes for food and reconstruction in Iraq, the authors illustrate that parapolitical structures are not 'deviant', but central to the operation of global governments. The creation of this parallel world economy, the source of huge political and economic potential, entices states to undertake new forms of regulation, either through their own intelligence agencies, or through the more shadowy world of criminal cartels.

“A book about secrets and surveillance . . . [from] one of the great forces on the side of clarity, democracy, openness, and really good writing” (Rebecca Solnit, author of Hope in the Dark). In 1964, a book entitled The Invisible Government shocked Americans with its revelations of a growing world of intelligence agencies playing fast and loose around the planet, a secret government lodged inside the one they knew that even the president didn’t fully control. Almost half a century later, everything about that “invisible government” has grown vastly larger, more disturbing, and far more visible. In his new book, Tom Engelhardt takes in something new under the sun: what is no longer, as in the 1960s, a national security state, but a global security one, fighting secret wars that have turned the president into an assassin-in-chief. Shadow Government offers a powerful survey of a democracy of the wealthy that your grandparents wouldn’t have recognized. “Tom Engelhardt is an iconoclast . . . Again and again, he goes to the heart of the matter, drawing on his awesomely wide reading, his knowledge of history, and his acute political radar system.” —Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost and Mirror at Midnight “This collection, focused on the new Orwellianism, is some of the finest writing and finest public service gathered together in book form for your portable pleasure and outrage.” —Rebecca Solnit of Call Them by Their True Names “Tom Engelhardt’s writing on the new forms of government surveillance is crucial because he has spent a lifetime studying the rise of the national security state.” —Juan Cole, professor of history at the University of Michigan

This book presents the alarming evidence that nation-states actively engage in terror, and also passively allow terror to be visited upon their citizens. It is not just liberation movements and radical groups that deploy terrorist tactics for offensive ends. States use terror defensively to directly intimidate their citizens, and to indirectly attack themselves or harm their citizens under a false flag. Their motivation? To provide pretexts for otherwise unwanted wars, or to gain increased police powers. Statesmen have executed indirect terrorism in various ways, but most plots tend to involve the pretence of blind eyes, misdirection, and cover-ups that give the statesmen plausible deniability. The shrinking of the 'Lusitania', the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the October Surprise, the first World Trade Center bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing and other well-known incidents suggest that terrorism is often successfully used by states to take the offensive against enemies at home and abroad. Was 9--11 such an indirect defensive attack?Len Bracken traces the clues circumstantially connecting a multi-armed hydra of oil interests, the CIA, FBI diplomats and statesmen to the September 11 attacks and examines whether they were engineered or allowed as a pretext for the war in Afghanistan. The subsequent anthrax attack targeting Democratic senators is considered in light of the controversial USA Patriot Acts rights-encroaching measures and the act's easy passage under conditions of terror. A shadow government appears to have covered the land like black ice.

Twilight Of The Shadow Government written by Kevin Shipp and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-15 with Political Science categories.

In this groundbreaking book, Kevin Shipp, a veteran CIA agent who worked with all four Directorates of the agency, including protecting the head of the CIA, provides his perspective on how the agency has strayed so far from its original mission to provide accurate intelligence to the American president. You will learn about the founding of the Agency, how the intelligence agencies have manipulated journalists through Project Mockingbird, as well as their new efforts with the Center for Global Engagement and Big Tech interference. Shipp will also give you his up close and personal assessment of how the directors of the agency have contributed to our safety or undermined it. Shipp and Heckenlively detail how the CIA has blocked whistleblowers and the reforms they champion, while also controlling our country through secret alliances with large corporations, Wall Street, Big Media, the drug trade, and blackmail of our political leaders. Shipp provides his own history with the Agency, both the good and bad, including the Agency’s attempt to ruin his career and life when he turned whistleblower. Perhaps most striking of all, Shipp lays out his plan for a dramatic overhaul of the Agency, likely to win wide approval from other sectors of the intelligence community, restoring the freedom of our country, while also keeping us safe from our adversaries.

Elites And Governance In China written by Xiaowei Zang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Political Science categories.

This book reveals the complex relationship between elite perceptions and behaviour, and governance, in China. It moves away from existing scholarship by focusing on functionaries, grass-roots elites, leading intellectuals, and opinion-makers in China and by looking beyond the top leadership, makes a significant contribution to our understanding of shared governance and broadened political participation in China. The chapters in this collection explore the elites’ role as opinion-makers, technical experts, producers of knowledge, and executives or managers, and pose a number of questions, the answers to which are crucial to understanding future political and economic development in China. What are elite perceptions of governance, inequality and justice; what do the elites mean by good governance; what is the influence of non-Chinese Communist Party elites in policy-making and implementation in China; how have they exerted their influence in the PRC and influenced its direction of future development; and what have grass-roots elites contributed to governance in local communities? Providing a keen insight into the role elites have played in governing China since 1978, this book is a pioneering effort to bring together elite studies and governance studies. As such, it will be highly relevant for policy-makers within international organizations, governments, and NGOs outside China as well as appealing to scholars and students interested in Chinese politics and governance.

Secret Government Projects explores the hidden world of classified government initiatives, drawing from declassified files and historical records to reveal the intersection of political maneuvering and scientific ambition. The book delves into areas like mind control experiments and unexplained aerial phenomena investigations, uncovering how governments have operated beyond public scrutiny. One intriguing example is the extent to which covert technological development was pursued during the Cold War, driven by fear and scientific competition. The book is structured to first lay the groundwork with historical context and legal frameworks, then presents case studies supported by primary source documents. It argues that a tension exists between national security and the public's right to know, highlighting how these projects, while often well-intentioned, crossed ethical boundaries. The final section analyzes the broader implications, examining ongoing challenges of government transparency and potential abuses of power. This exploration offers a valuable, neutral perspective, allowing readers to form their own conclusions based on the evidence presented. It provides a comprehensive overview of these projects, emphasizing documented facts over sensationalism, and meticulously sourcing its information. This allows the reader to delve into the documented history of government secrecy.
