Many are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second only to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. Readers of "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," however, will find that as a young man John Bunyan was an atheist and infidel who enjoyed sin and rebelled towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desparate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God.

Limited Time Promotional Offer Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he has done unto my soul. (Psalm 66:16) Grace Abounding (1666) is a classic work of spiritual autobiography--a genre which flourished in Calvinist England as anxiety over the state or destiny of one's soul led to rigorous self-scrutiny and the sharing of holy experiences. This is a short and honest account of how God demonstrated His exceeding great mercy to His unworthy servant, John Bunyan. The title contains allusions to two Biblical passages: 'Grace Abounding' is a reference to the Epistle to Romans 5:20, which states 'Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound' (KJV) and 'Chief of Sinners' refers to First Epistle to 1 Timothy 1:15, where Paul refers to himself by the same appellation. This story specifically tells how Bunyan was converted. John Bunyan was a companion of sin and was troubled by sin. He fought temptation and sin in his own strength and lost, and in despair he gave up hope of ever finding God's mercy; but the Lord Jesus Christ at last delivered him from the guilt and terror that so often and so viciously troubled him. In addition to this, a short account of Bunyan's call to the work of the ministry is told, along with the trials and trouble he encountered - including some of the difficulties he faced while in prison. This is all taken from his writings and is now published for the encouragement and support of others who are weak and tempted and need strength and hope and victory in Jesus. About John Bunyan: John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and preacher, he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory The Holy War (1682).

John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," is a priceless literary classic that communicates the author's anguish over his sin, his confession of sin, and the life-changing impact of God's saving grace. Written while John Bunyan was imprisoned for holding unlicensed church services, "Grace Abounding" was published in 1666. "Grace Abounding," which is really John Bunyan's autobiography, is the unsparing account of one man's spiritual journey from atheism and blasphemy to devout Christianity. Though a reckless and profane youth led John Bunyan to despair by telling him that he had committed unforgivable sins, two religious books belonging to Bunyan's wife set him on the straight and narrow and a lifetime of pious devotion. Honest and unblinking in his self-assessment, John Bunyan saw it as his duty to tell his story in order to comfort all those struggling with their faith. This classic of religious literature continues to be essential reading for the faithful and for students of great English literature. During his lifetime, John Bunyan authored nearly sixty books, nine of which were written while he was in prison for unlicensed preaching. His works include The Pilgrim's Progress, The Life and Death of Mr. Badman, and The Holy War. "Grace Abounding," a wonderful addition to those titles, makes for a stirring and edifying devotional.

This definitive Companion provides a critical overview of literary culture in the period from John Milton to William Blake. Its broad chronological range responds to recent reshapings of the canon and identifies new directions of study. The Companion is composed of over fifty contributions from leading scholars in the field, its essays offer students a comprehensive and accessible survey of the field from a wide range of perspectives. It also, however, gives researchers and faculty the opportunity to update their acquaintance with new critical and scholarly work. The volume meets the needs of an intellectual world increasingly given over to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary study by covering philosophical, political, cultural and historical writing, as well as literary writing. Unlike other similar volumes, the main body of the Companion consists of readings of individual texts, both those commonly and less commonly studied.
