This book grew from a series of lectures presented in 1983 in the context of the Summer Program in Phenomenology at The Pennsylvania State University. For these lectures I made use of notes and short essays which I had written between 1978 and 1982 during interdisciplinary seminars on Heidegger's later philosophy in general, and on his philosophy of language and art in particular. The participants in these seminars consisted of faculty members and graduate students concerned with the sciences, the arts, literature, literary criticism, art history, art education, and philosophy. On both occasions I made a special effort to introduce those who did not yet have a specialized knowledge of Heidegger's philosophy, to his later way of thinking. In this effort I was guided by the conviction that we, as a group, had to aim for accuracy, precision, clarity, faithfulness, and depth, while at the same time taking distance, comparing Heidegger's views with ideas of other philosophers and thinkers, and cultivat ing a proper sense of criticism. Over the years it has become clear to me that among professional philoso phers, literary critics, scholars concerned with art history and art education, and scientists from various disciplines, there are many who are particularly interested in "Heidegger's philosophy of art". I have also become convinced that many of these dedicated scholars often have difficulty in understanding Heidegger's lectures on art and art works. This is understandable.

As a major member of the New York School, Barnett Newman is celebrated for his radical explorations of color and scale and, as a precursor to the Minimalist movement, for his significant contribution to the development of twentieth-century American art. But if his reputation and place in history have grown progressively more secure, the work he produced remains highly resistant to interpretation. His paintings are rigorously abstract, and his writings full of references to arcane metaphysical concepts. Frustrated over their inability to reconcile the works with what the artist said about them, some critics have dismissed the paintings as impenetrable. The art historian Yve-Alain Bois called Newman "the most difficult artist" he could name, and the philosopher Jean-Fran ois Lyotard declared that "there is almost nothing to 'consume' in his work], or if there is, I do not know what it is." In order to advance interpretation, this book investigates both Newman's writings and paintings in light of ideas articulated by one of Germany's most important and influential philosophers: Martin Heidegger. Many of the themes explored in Newman's statements, and echoed in the titles of his paintings, betray numerous points of intersection with Heidegger's philosophy: the question of origins, the distinctiveness of human presence, a person's sense of place, the sensation of terror, the definition of freedom, the importance of mood to existence, the particularities of art and language, the impact of technology on modern life, the meaning of time, and the human being's relationship to others and to the divine. The Origin of Art (sometimes translated "The Origin of the Works of Art) is one of the foundational texts of 20th-century aesthetics. Heidegger explores the nature and essence of art and its role in revealing truth. He argues that art is not merely a representation or a copy of reality, but that it uniquely brings forth the truth of being. This truth, according to Heidegger, is not an objective, detached truth, but rather a revelation of the world and our place in it. Works of art, he suggests, create their own world and invite the viewer to enter that world, thus opening up new ways of experiencing and understanding being. Heidegger uses examples from various art forms, including architecture and poetry, to illustrate his ideas. Heidegger uses his concepts of Dasein "Being" (meaning being-there or existence), "unveiling" (truth as a process of revealing), and "world" (the context of meaning within which beings appear) in relation to the creation of Art. These concepts are used to explore how art, in its essence, is not merely an aesthetic experience, but a fundamental way of engaging with the truth of our existence. This understanding of Aesthetics as an antidote to the brutality of existence is very Nietzschean. The collection this paper comes from, Holzwege, is second only to "Being and Time" in fame. Here he levies some of his most perceptive commentary on Hegel, Descartes, Nietzsche, Anaximander, Rilke, and Hölderlin. Wood Paths consists of a collection of essays that reflect on philosophical and existential questions through the analysis of art, poetry, and history. The original German title "Holzwege" refers to the logging paths in German forests, which anyone who's hiked in Germany knows are always dead-ends. Hence, this is sometimes translated as "dead ends" or "logging roads" or "Off the Beaten Track" or something along those lines, as this is what the title means- the dead end trails of philosophy and the inherent obscurity of the pursuit of Being. Heidegger uses these essays to explore his ontological inquiries, particularly the nature of being and the relationship between human beings and the world around them.
