In Het goede boek blikt een bejaarde man terug op zijn leven in de stadjes T., A. en H., die aan een stoomtramlijn liggen te wachten op een Eerste Wereldoorlog. In H. valt hem een kast van een huis toe, dat hem later weer wordt ontfutseld; veel vrouwen spelen er een rol, mogelijke familieleden, dienstboden natuurlijk, hoeren wonen er ook; enkele mannen, een dokter, een notaris, later horden krijgslui, spelen bijrollen, hoezeer ook cruciaal; en dan is er het goede boek, waarin de held zijn binnengedachten optekent, in Het goede boek cursief weergegeven. De sfeer van het saaie, broeierige, kneuterige en in de letterlijkste zin intrigerende leven van rond de eeuwwisseling schept Brakman met meesterhand; de geest van een oude, achterdochtige, wat verwarde man loopt ingenieus over in die van de marionettenspeler die op onnavolgbare wijze aan de touwtjes trekt. Veel personen worden in Het goede boekter aarde besteld, ja, een hele generatie; maar Brakman kent het geheim van de daarbij zo in het geheel niet passende twinkeling in het oog.

This book is designed to teach undergraduate and beginning graduate students how to understand, analyse and describe syntactic phenomena in different languages. The book covers every aspect of syntax from the basics to more specialised topics, such as clitics which have grammatical importance but cannot be used in isolation, and negation, in which a construction contradicts the meaning of a sentence. The approach taken combines concepts from different theoretical schools, which view syntax differently. These include M. A. K. The emphasis of the book is on syntactic structures rather than linguistic meaning, and the book stresses the difference between a well-formed sentence and a meaningful one.
