Tussen 1385 en 1435 groeide Amsterdam van een klein, maar ambitieus stadje aan de Amstel uit tot een middelgrote stad met internationale handelscontacten en pretenties. Van een onbetekenend lokaal handelscentrum werd Amsterdam tot een gewilde partner van graven en een gevreesde vijand van de Hanzesteden. Er kwamen nieuwe stadspoorten, een nieuw stadhuis, een nieuw marktplein, nieuwe straten en stegen. Maar de meest markante verandering onderging de stad door een keur aan nieuwe kerkelijke, religieuze en charitatieve gebouwen die vanaf de late veertiende eeuw verrezen. Van één naar twee parochiekerken, van drie naar vijf stadskapellen, van één naar zes gasthuizen en, als meest prominent fenomeen, van nul naar zestien kloosters. In dit boek belicht Bas de Melker deze nieuwe stichtingen. Zij kunnen onmogelijk los gezien worden van de mentaliteits- en gedragsveranderingen van de poorter, vooral wat betreft de wijze waarop hij zijn geloof beleefde en daaraan uiting gaf. In de halve eeuw die in dit boek centraal staat veranderde hier misschien wel evenveel in als in de voor ons zichtbare, ruimtelijke wereld van de stad zelf. De vraag welke wisselwerking er bestond tussen de metamorfose van de devotie en die van de stad staat centraal.
