Je koopt nietsvermoedend een huis en het blijkt een gruwelijk toegetakeld vrouwenlijk te bevatten. De autoriteiten zien jou aan voor de dader, terwijl je op het tijdstip van de moord onmogelijk ter plaatse hebt kunnen zijn. Wat doe je? Murk van M., hoofdpersoon in de nieuwe roman van Atte Jongstra, ziet hierin aanleiding zijn bestaan op papier te zetten. Het resultaat is een lijvige roman, waarvan Murk zich afvraagt 'wat er nog allemaal achter hem ligt'. Het huis M. is een detective met een lijk en een groeiend aantal schuldigen. Het slachtoffer keert herhaaldelijk terug en verwart de gang van het politieonderzoek. De leider van dit onderzoek ontwikkelt bovendien een hechte vriendschap met de verdachte, maar blijkt in den beginne ook zelf geen schone handen te hebben. Jongstra's roman bevat vele detective-elementen die Het huis M. een adembenemende spanning verlenen, maar is daarnaast ook één grote voorbereiding voor een slotrede waarin Murk zich uiteindelijk denkt vrij te pleiten. Het boek is daardoor een duizelingwekkende optelsom van mogelijkheden en invalshoeken op de moord, het geheugen en het bestaan in het algemeen. Na Groente (1991) en Cicerone (1992) is Jongstra's nieuwe roman de derde stap in een nu al meeslepende prozacyclus, waarin de schrijver zich ontpopt als een buitengewoon geestige, kleurrijke en welsprekende geheugenkunstenaar.
