Vera groeit op in een welgesteld Joods gezin, maar valt voor Miloš, een arme Servische dorpeling. Samen beleven ze een grootse liefde, versterkt door een misschien nog wel grotere toewijding aan hun geloof in het communisme en een rechtvaardige wereld. Ze nemen deel aan de partizanenstrijd tegen de nazi’s en aan het eind van de oorlog wordt hun dochter Nina geboren. Na conflicten tussen Tito en Stalin wordt Miloš onverwacht gearresteerd als verrader. Gedesillusioneerd pleegt hij zelfmoord in zijn cel. Vera wordt opgepakt en voor een onmogelijke keuze gesteld: Miloš als verrader erkennen en vrijuit gaan, of zelf in een kamp belanden. Vera’s liefde voor Miloš gaat boven alles en zij kiest voor hem. Op Goli Otok, een kaal eiland voor de kust, wordt zij drie jaar lang vastgehouden en gemarteld. Haar zesjarige dochtertje blijft alleen achter. Vera’s keuze zou nog generaties lang doorwerken. Op haar negentigste verjaardag stellen haar dochter en kleindochter voor met Vera naar Goli Otok af te reizen om erachter te komen onder welke omstandigheden zij haar dochter destijds in de steek liet. De reis legt de meest tegenstrijdige emoties bloot – angst, liefde en barmhartigheid – die het weefsel van een familie voor altijd kunnen veranderen. Het leven speelt met mij laat zien hoe en waarom wij soms tot de meest onmogelijke beslissingen worden gedreven. Grossman beschrijft als geen ander hoe trouw en politieke ideologie de kern van een gezin kunnen raken en de grens tussen standvastigheid en verraad vervaagt.
