Het portret van Dorian Gray (Engelstalige titel The Picture of Dorian Gray) is de enige gepubliceerde roman van Oscar Wilde, en voor het eerst uitgebracht in Engeland in 1890. Het boek verscheen in 1893 in een Nederlandse vertaling van Elisabeth Couperus-Baud, de vrouw van Louis Couperus. Louis Couperus had het boek rechtstreeks van Oscar Wilde ontvangen, en zijn vrouw was er erg van onder de indruk. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (Dublin, 16 oktober 1854 - Parijs, 30 november 1900) was een schrijver, dichter en estheet van Ierse afkomst die een groot deel van zijn leven in Engeland heeft gewoond. Het portret van Dorian Gray begon als een korte roman gepubliceerd voor Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Het verhaal onderging een paar grote veranderingen voor de uiteindelijke publicatie, waarvan sommige tot vandaag de dag bewaard zijn gebleven. Het boek is sinds het werd uitgebracht herhaaldelijk verfilmd voor film en televisie. In 1891 verscheen Wildes enige roman, The Picture of Dorian Gray, een klassiek 'gothic' griezelsprookje met een Faustiaans thema, waarin het estheticisme een belangrijk motief is.
