In Fabritius, schilder van Het puttertje vertelt Deborah Davis het opmerkelijke levensverhaal van deze schilder. Rembrandt was zijn mentor en Vermeer zijn rivaal. Carel Fabritius zelf - getalenteerd, knap en ambitieus - was niet in staat het ongeluk af te wenden. Twee keer trouwde hij, maar zijn vrouwen stierven al jong. Hij bleef achter met zijn kinderen, maar ook zij stierven op jeugdige leeftijd. Zijn eigen einde was even tragisch als spectaculair. In een naburige woning ligt kruit opgeslagen. Daar gaat iemand met een lamp de keldertrap af, struikelt en de boel ontploft. Samen met zijn schilderijen ligt Fabritius onder het puin. Vijftien van zijn schilderijen overleefden de schilder, waaronder Het puttertje. Dat schilderij - waar Deborah Davis ook nog het verdere levensverhaal van beschrijft - bracht Fabritius uiteindelijk onsterfelijkheid.
