Ergens in zijn kritisch proza stelt Paul van Ostaijen ironisch dat slechte auteurs en lezers altijd een vouwbeen bij de hand hebben; de goede doen het zonder. In dit boek wordt uitgegaan van de gedachte dat niemand het zonder vouwbeen kan stellen. Het vouwbeen fungeert in dit geval als een metafoor voor de literatuuropvattingen van waaruit lezers en critici een betekenis en een waarde toekennen aan literaire teksten. Rond deze gedachte organiseerde het "Paul van Ostaijen-instituut. Centrum voor de studie van de literatuur in Vlaanderen sinds 1916" een colloquium. Meteen was dit een gelegenheid om ruim aandacht te besteden aan van Ostaijen, de naamgever van het instituut, wiens honderste verjaardag in 1996 uitgebreid is herdacht. Dit boek bundelt de lezingen van het colloquium. Het gaat over literatuuropvattingen en over van Ostaijen, maar laat vooral ook zien hoe diverse invalshoeken in de hededaagse literatuurstudie elkaar aanvullen en verrijken.

This collection of critical essays is designed to lay the foundations for a new theory of the European avant-garde. It starts from the assumption that not one all-embracing intention of all avant-garde movements - i.e. the intention of "reintegrating art into the practice of life" (Peter Bürger) - but the challenge of new cultural technologies, in particular photography and cinema, constitutes the main driving force of the formation and further development of the avant-garde. This approach permits to establish a theoretical framework that takes into account the diversity of artistic aims and directions of the various art movements and encourages a wide and open exploration of the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of the great variety of avant-gardist innovations. Following the theoretical foundation of the new approach, individual contributions concentrate on a diverse range of avant-gardist concepts, trends and manifestations from cubist painting and the literary work of Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein to the screeching voices of futurism, dadaist photomontage and film, surrealist photographs and sculptures and neo-avant-gardist theories as developed by the French group OuLiPo. The volume closes with new insights gained from placing the avant-garde in the contexts of literary institutions and psychoanalytical and sociological concepts. The main body of the volume is based on presentations and discussions of a three-day research seminar held at Yale University, New Haven, in February 2000. The research group formed on this occasion will continue with its efforts to elaborate a new theory of the avant-garde in the coming years.

Jan Walravens (1920-1965) played a central role in Flemish literature as he introduced and facilitated literary experiments after the Second World War. He was a leading essayist and literary critic, who wrote thousands of reviews showing the younger generation the way to French existentialism and to the international avant-garde. In addition to novels and shorter fiction, he published in-depth philosophical essays on Kierkegaard, Sade and Sartre. His international network of artistic relations turned him into a central figure in the Flemish literary world, a position he held until his untimely death at the age of forty-five. Jan Walravens and the Experiment presents ten essays that chart the various aspects of Walravens' immense activity: his philosophical thinking on Sade, his relation with the visual arts, his position as an avant-gardist, his defense of poetry old and new, his view on the French nouveau roman, his novels, and his propagation of a new kind of literary diary. The authors have used the Walravens archive and unearthed some material that has never before been brought to the public's attention, most notably the facsimile of a 'cadavre exquis' Walravens created with Albert Bontridder and Florent Welles.
