Er gaat geen dag voorbij zonder dat het zelf ter sprake komt. Van de arbeidsmarkt tot het internet: overal stellen mensen zich de vraag wat ze zelf willen, zelf kunnen, wie ze zelf zijn. En dan is er nog de wildgroei aan spiritualiteit en zelfhulp. Waarom is zelfkennis toch zo belangrijk? Wat is eigenlijk het zelf? Duidelijk is dat allerminst, maar dat is geen bezwaar om het er veel en vaak over te hebben: je moet jezelf blijven, jezelf niet voorbijrennen, weer tot jezelf komen. Kennelijk is er een domein in onze persoonlijkheid dat we als individueel, eigen en onafhankelijk zien. Maar klopt dat wel? De filosofie, psychologie en sociologie hebben zich van oudsher met deze vragen beziggehouden. Ook in de romanliteratuur is zelfkennis een constant thema. In De ogen van de ander ontwikkelt Christien Brinkgreve een visie waarin de anderen een fundamentele rol spelen. Het zelf is niet een autonome kern, maar is gevormd in de omgang met anderen. Zelfkennis krijg je niet van jezelf. Connie Palmen over De ogen van de ander: Ik heb het boek in één adem uitgelezen (...) Wat Christien Brinkgreve in haar inleidend woord belooft, maakt ze daarna helemaal waar in de opeenvolgende hoofdstukken. Op een prettige manier laat ze de lezer een tocht maken langs verschillende invalshoeken waarmee de disciplines in de loop van de geschiedenis het zelf benaderden. Omdat ze toch vooral probeert het probleem sociologisch te benaderen en bij de anderen alleen grasduint, heb ik geen enkele last gehad van het ontbreken van met name filosofen van wie je zou denken dat ze in een boek als dit niet mochten ontbreken. Het mag best. Het is een interessante exposé geworden van een even zo interessant probleem. Christien Brinkgreve heeft de lezer bij de hand en laat hem niet struikelen. '

In this book a study is presented on the attitudes of 12- to 20-year-old youngsters towards social limits, imposed by their social and educational environment by means of laws, rules, values, norms or expectations. The study is part of a research programme on the course and treatment of juvenile delinquency, which started at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen during the eighties. Young people's attitudes towards social limits are assessed by the 'Standard Reaction Instrument'. A critical incident technique is used to elicit young people's knowledge, behavioral intentions and motivations in ten hypothetical situations including social limits. The instrument was administered from youngsters in secondary schools and from same-aged detained youngsters who have committed at least one criminal offence which has been recorded by police or judicial authorities. The responses of both groups are compared in order to test the validity of the instrument. Further, the relationship is tested between the youngsters' attitudes towards social limits and self-reported delinquent and aggressive behavior. Finally, a comparison is made between the responses of Flemish and Dutch youngsters. Starting point of the empirical study is a social psychological view on juvenile delinquency. In this view, which is based on the self-presentation paradigm developed by the sociologist Ervin Goffman and the early symbolic interactionists, juvenile delinquency is considered as a means of social communication towards significant others (parents, teachers, peers, society). Special attention is paid to the development, maintenance and management of social reputation by the juvenile delinquent.
