The pronunciamiento, a formal list of grievances designed to spark political change in nineteenth-century Mexico, was a problematic yet necessary practice. Although pronunciamientos rarely achieved the goals for which they were undertaken and sometimes resulted in armed rebellion, they were nonetheless both celebrated and commemorated, and the perceptions and representations of pronunciamientos themselves reflected the Mexican people’s response to these “revolutions.” The third in a series of books examining the pronunciamiento, this collection addresses the complicated legacy of pronunciamientos and their place in Mexican political culture. The essays explore the sacralization and legitimization of these revolts and of their leaders in the nation’s history and consider why these celebrations proved ultimately ineffective in consecrating the pronunciamiento as a force for good, rather than one motivated by desires for power, promotion, and plunder. Celebrating Insurrection offers readers interpretations of acts of celebration and commemoration that explain the uneasy adoption of pronunciamientos as Mexico’s preferred means of effecting political change during this turbulent period in the nation’s history.

El presente libro trata de resumir en sus diferentes atapas, el pasado olvidado de este rincón huasteco de Tamaulipas, llamado Nuevo Morelos. Un pueblo con mucha riqueza histórica; desde las poblaciones prehispánicas que describieron Abraham Ortelius, Guy Stresser-Péan y Joaquín Meade, hasta los tiempos modernos. Indagando en donde se pudo, el autor aborda el pasado huasteco de la villa y habla un poco de los tének que habitaron Tanchichan, Vista Hermosa, Tanxique, y Camalauche; para posteriormente pasar a los tiempos escandonianos y el surgimiento del paraje de Mesillas; lugar que, con el paso del tiempo, se convirtió en una importante congregación perteneciente primeramente a la villa de Santa Bárbara y después a la villa de Baltazar Morelos. Se aborda también, como fue que Mesillas fue desplazando poco a poco a la villa de Morelos y como desde 1849 se gestiona por primera vez el cambio de poderes. Entenderemos, por qué en ese tiempo no procedió la petición y cómo fue que, en 1860, el gobernador finalmente hizo caso a la gestión hecha por don Jesús Izaguirre Moctezuma. El autor trata de explicar de manera, breve, detallada, y con las pruebas pertinentes, que ese 19 de octubre de 1860, el gobernador Juan José de la Garza no quiso formar un nuevo municipio, sino que sólo autorizó el cambio de ubicación de la cabecera de Morelos, a un lugar que contara con más recursos naturales y de comunicación. Pero como en todo cambio de ese tipo, era de esperarse que los pobladores de la antigua villa, jamás permitirían perder su poder político, por lo que después de meses de lucha, a principios de 1862 se hace oficial la división municipal y el surgimiento de un Antiguo y un Nuevo Morelos. Este libro contiene también los hechos acontecidos en el municipio y los personajes que lo visitaron, así como los factores que orillaron a abandonar la villa entre 1916 y 1918 y repoblarla el 25 de mayo de 1921, al darse cuenta que el gobernador planeaba reincorporar el territorio a Antiguo Morelos. También conocerán la disputa territorial que se dio en 1942 y la mediación que hizo el padre Carlos Cortez para calmar los ánimos. El presente trabajo, no aborda los tiempos modernos, sino que sitúa los hechos hasta la década de 1950, dando pauta a una segunda parte.
