Alexander von Humboldt gehört um 1810 zu den bekanntesten Wissenschaftlern der Welt. Sein Ruhm beruht in hohem Maß auf seiner Amerikanischen Reise (1799–1804). Seit dem Ankauf der Amerikanischen Reisetagebücher durch die Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz im Jahr 2013 hat die Humboldt-Forschung auf verschiedenen Ebenen neue Impulse erhalten. Inhaltlich bieten die Tagebücher reiches Material u. a. für die Wissenschaftsgeschichte, für die Literaturwissenschaft sowie für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Arbeit mit Manuskripten wirft gleichzeitig Fragen der Erfassung, der Materialität und der Edition auf. Schließlich wird durch die jüngst begonnenen Forschungs-, Sicherungs- und Editionsprojekte die Beschäftigung mit Humboldt auch institutionell intensiviert. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes spiegeln den engen Zusammenhang all dieser Perspektiven wider und nähern sich Humboldt in seinem Schreiben zwischen Natur- und Kulturwissenschaft als einem hochaktuellen Denker. In 1810 Alexander von Humboldt is among the best known scientists in the word. His fame rested to a large extent on his American journey (1799-1804). Since the Prussian Cultural Foundation acquired the American travel diaries in 2013, Humboldt research has received new impulses on many levels. The content of the diaries offers rich source material for the disciplines including history of science, literary history, art, and cultural studies. Work with the manuscripts also throws up questions of recording, materiality and editing. Finally, the recently-started research, conservation and editing projects have also intensified the institutional engagement with Humboldt. The essays in this volume reflect the close connections between all these perspectives and approach Humboldt through his writings between natural and cultural history as a very contemporary thinker.

Alexander von Humboldt: Perceiving the World provides an interdisciplinary exploration into Humboldt’s approach to seeing and describing the many subjects he pursued. Die Besonderheit der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit und des Schreibens Alexander von Humboldts wird häufig anhand einer den Raum erschließenden Bewegung beschrieben. Sie spannen den Bogen von der Anordnung der Phänomene über die quantifizierbaren Beziehungen empirisch bestimmter Orte bis hin zum Anspruch, die Faszination der besuchten Gegenden einzufangen und ästhetisch übertragbar zu machen. Über allem steht dabei die Reise in ihrer wissenschaftlichen, biographischen und literarischen Dimension. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge gehen auf das Symposion „Landschaften und Kartographien der Humboldtian Science“ zurück, das im November 2016 im Haus der Brandenburgisch-Preußischen Geschichte in Potsdam stattfand. Die zweitägige Veranstaltung bildete den offiziellen Abschluss der Arbeit des Teilprojekts „Genealogie, Chronologie, Epistemologie“, das im Rahmen des BMBF-Verbundprojekts „Alexander von Humboldts Amerikanische Reisetagebücher“ der Universität Potsdam und der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin-PK drei Jahre lang die Tagebücher des preußischen Kultur- und Naturwissenschaftlers erforschte. Gleichzeitig bildete sie den dritten und letzten Teil der jährlich stattfindenden Potsdamer Alexander von Humboldt-Symposien, welche die Arbeit des Projekts 2014–2016 begleiteten. Der vorliegende Band kann daher auch als Fortsetzung des 2016 erschienenen „Horizonte der Humboldt-Forschung: Natur, Kultur, Schreiben“ (POINTE Band 16) gelesen werden, der die Ergebnisse der ersten beiden Symposien dokumentiert. Die damals aufgeworfenen Fragen und behandelten Thematiken werden hier fortgeführt und weiterentwickelt. The specific characteristic of Alexander von Humboldt’s scientific work and writing is often described in terms of a drive to interpret space. Concepts of the representation of spatial relationships, such as maps and depictions of landscapes, are thus epistemologically and aesthetically fundamental to Humboldt’s method. They range from the ordering of phenomena, through the quantifiable relationships of empirically determined locations, to the challenge of capturing the fascination of the places visited and conveying it aesthetically. In all of this, the journey takes priority in its scientific, biographical and literary dimensions. The papers collected in this volume have their origins in the symposium ‘Landscapes and Cartographies in Humboldtian Science’ which took place on November 2016 in the Haus der Brandenburgisch-Preußischen Geschichte in Potsdam. The two-day symposium formed the official conclusion of the section ‘Genealogy, Chronology, Epistemology’ of the wider BMBF collaborative project ‘Alexander von Humboldt’s American Travel Diaries’, which had for three years been devoted to the study of the Prussian cultural and natural historian. It was also the third and last of the annual Potsdam Alexander von Humboldt symposia which accompanied the work of the project between 2014 and 2016. This volume can therefore be read as a continuation of the 2016 publication Horizonte der Humboldt-Forschung: Natur, Kultur, Schreiben (POINTE vol. 16) which documented the findings of the first two symposia. The questions raised and themes discussed there are continued and further developed here.
