Acute spinal injury, although relatively uncommon, can result in serious loss of motor and sensory function, and is thus one of the most catastrophic medical conditions. In the work first reported here, it has been demonstrated that intraoperative neural monitoring by electrophysiological means should now be considered standard care for surgical procedures that carry risk of CNS injury. Neural Monitoring covers many new developments in the prevention and treatment of spinal cord injury, especially the use of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), in patient monitoring during many neurosurgical and orthopedic procedures. Although still largely considered experimental and not in routine use, intraoperative monitoring techniques using evoked-potential analyses are here shown to have a clear benefit in the prevention of injury to the patient. Experts in all aspects of neural monitoring have contributed chapters covering: neural substrates of normal somatosensory-evoked potentials * mechanisms of evoked potential responses to injury * clinical experience with somatosensory-evoked potentials * cerebrocortical and spinal motor monitors * future trends.Salzman's new book on Neural Monitoring is at the cutting edge of this exciting, high-powered new field and holds the promise of a bright future for new techniques to prevent CNS injury during surgery. It is an indispensable resource for all neurosurgeons, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists concerned with improving patients' chances for survival and drastic reduction of surgical risk.

“Masterton turns in another top-notch performance. . . . This is an excellent horror story, with an added dimension, an extra layer of suspense” (Booklist, starred review). Michael Spencer is involved in a car crash that kills his girlfriend. He wakes to find himself in the hospital of a small town in Montana. There he convalesces and gradually becomes acquainted with the local community, most of whom seem to be clever and charming, although some are arrogant and difficult to get on with. In particular he forms a relationship with a smart and pretty local girl. He learns that he has been in a coma for weeks and that his friend’s remains have already been sent back to California for cremation. He keeps in touch with his family through emails and phone calls. As time goes by, however, and he gradually recovers his mobility, he begins to notice odd things about the community. People disappear without explanation and nobody ever mentions them again. Strangers come and go on a regular basis but the local people seem to ignore them. He is about to leave and go back home when his new girlfriend disappears. He stays to investigate. He gradually begins to come to the terrible conclusion that he is actually dead and that everybody in the town knows that he is no more than a ghost. The truth, however, is far more shocking . . .

When the 13 founders of the American Psychiatric Association came together in 1844, hospitals were small, and the administrative aspects of a superinten dent's job were relatively minor compared with their size and complexity today. Since the turn of the century, administration-the art and the sci ence-has become a specialty of great importance, particularly in big business and government. Business recognizes fully that the success of organizational endeavors depends to a great extent on the talents and energies of top lead ers. As a result, industry spends huge sums of money to train promising young executives and offers generous salaries and benefits to entice them. Anyone who wants to invest in a business first asks: "Who manages this organization, and is this management competitive in today's marketplace?" Although health is today a great industry, emphasis on the executive role has lagged behind that in the general business field. In mental health circles, the strong emphasis on one-to-one therapy has delayed a full appreciation of the influence of organization per se on patient care and treatment. Yet there 1 are now many signs of change. The popularization of behavioral science and the rise of social and community psychiatry have brought organizational con siderations forward. We are increasingly concerned with the human side of enterprise, with worker satisfaction, group dynamics, and organizational morale. Other flags have been unfurled.
