IJzeren Koninkrijk is een machtige geschiedenis van een van de indrukwekkendste staten die Europa ooit kende. Vlak na de gruwelijke Tweede Wereldoorlog oordeelden de geallieerden dat ze korte metten moesten maken met de staat Pruisen, die ze als de belichaming van het verfoeide militarisme zagen. Pruisen werd zonder pardon opgeheven en verdeeld. Daarmee kwam er een eind aan vierhonderd jaar geschiedenis. Christopher Clark toont in zijn glasheldere en prachtig geschreven geschiedenis dat Pruisen nog wel iets meer is geweest dan waar de geallieerden het voor aanzagen. Pruisen begon eeuwen geleden als een onoverzichtelijke lappendeken van vorstenrijkjes, hertogdommen en graafschappen, zonder veel natuurlijke hulpbronnen en zelfs zonder een verbindende cultuur. Het voerde vele oorlogen, speelde een belangrijke rol bij de opheffing van het Heilige Roomse Rijk, bloeide op tijdens de glorieuze verlichtingsperiode onder Frederik de Grote en leed tijdens het rampzalige napoleontische tijdperk. Pruisen groeide in de loop der tijd uit tot een staat die de Europese humanistische traditie mede vormgaf, die uitmuntte door een efficiënt overheidsapparaat en een onkreukbare ambtenarij, die bij tijden een ongekende religieuze tolerantie aan de dag legde, en die onder leiding van Otto von Bismarck in 1871 zorgde voor de eenwording van het Duitse rijk. Clark concludeert dat Pruisen een onschatbare bijdrage heeft geleverd aan de westerse beschaving.

Throughout history rivers have always been a source of life and of conflict. This book investigates the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine’s (CCNR) efforts to secure the principle of freedom of navigation on Europe’s prime river. The book explores how the most fundamental change in the history of international river governance arose from European security concerns. It examines how the CCNR functioned as an ongoing experiment in reconciling national and common interests that contributed to the emergence of European prosperity in the course of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it shows that modern conceptions and practices of security cannot be understood without accounting for prosperity considerations and prosperity policies. Incorporating research from archives in Great Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as the recently opened CCNR archives in France, this study operationalises a truly transnational perspective that effectively opens the black box of the oldest and still existing international organisation in the world in its first centenary. In showing how security-prosperity considerations were a driving force in the unfolding of Europe’s prime river in the nineteenth century, it is of interest to scholars of politics and history, including the history of international relations, European history, transnational history and the history of security, as well as those with an interest in current themes and debates about transboundary water governance. This book discusses the work of German economists Gustav von Schmoller and Adolph Wagner, its influence on the tradition of German and Austrian economic and social thought, and its implications for the discipline today. In the late eighteenth century mental illness was treated with brutal and inhumane methods by ‘mad-doctors’, and the treatment of George III was no exception. George III’s Illnesses and His Doctors provides an insightful, forensic and sympathetic picture of how and why members of the royal family turned in desperation to an unqualified quack practitioner, James Lucett, in the hope of finding a cure for the king’s ‘insanity’. Much has been written in the past about ‘Mad King George’. This book brings fresh evidence and new understanding to the case of the ‘mad’ king. Lucett’s claims were tested in psychiatry’s first ‘therapeutic trial’ and science was invoked in an attempt to improve understanding of the roots of insanity. The results were mixed but nevertheless George III’s case and the subsequent career of the deeply flawed Lucett were important elements in the revolutionary change in attitudes to the treatment of the insane which came about as the nineteenth century progressed. Based closely on primary source material, George III’s Illnesses and His Doctors is a moving story of human suffering but also of efforts to challenge medical orthodoxy and to improve understanding of mental illness. Some of the issues raised in the early nineteenth century remain to be resolved now.
