Tegen de achtergrond van de roerige jaren van de Italiaanse eenwording, het Risorgimento, blikt Carlino openhartig terug op de hindernissen die een jongeman moet overwinnen om volwassen te worden en op zijn worsteling met de liefde en politieke idealen. Carlino groeit op in kasteel Fratta, in de provincie van Veneto. Gegrepen door nationalistische gevoelens trekt hij al jong naar alle Italiaanse centra van de macht: Venetië, Genua, Rome, Milaan en Napels. Ook de liefde kruist zijn pad: Pisana, met haar temperamentvolle karakter, trekt hem voortdurend aan, maar stoot hem ook af. In Belijdenissen van een Italiaan schetst Nievo een weergaloos en gepassioneerd portret van het verval van het eeuwenoude feodale regime dat in Italië zo lang de scepter zwaaide. Bovenal is het een boek over hartstocht, moed, vergeving, opoffering en deugd een boek vol vitaliteit.
