This book covers a broad spectrum of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices employed in pediatric oncology worldwide, with a special focus on the methods widely used in Western countries. It is a scientifically based, practice-oriented handbook that will meet the needs of pediatric oncologists working in medical practices and hospitals. An introductory section includes a comparative overview of current CAM use in pediatric oncology in different countries. Commonly used CAM methods are then discussed in a series of chapters that provide a theoretical description of the method in question, followed by more practically oriented information, including scientific data if applicable. Special attention is paid to the issue of how to integrate each method into conventional pediatric oncology. The closing parts of the book consider aspects of CAM requiring further development, such as institutional research, and provide a road map on establishing integrative pediatric oncology worldwide.

Integrative Pediatrics written by Timothy Culbert and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-10 with Medical categories.

There is ample evidence that children and adolescents in large numbers are actively using integrative (complementary and alternative) therapies. Various studies now indicate that over 50% of pediatricians surveyed would refer a patient for integrative therapy, and they would welcome more natural therapies for children provided they were safe and effective. However, there has been little training for pediatricians in this area. Integrative Pediatrics addresses these issues and provides guidelines for pediatricians, parents, and general audiences in a balanced, evidence-based manner. In this volume in the Weil Integrative Medicine Library series, the authors describe a rational and evidence-based approach to the integrative therapy of childhood disorders and well-child care, integrating the principles of alternative and complementary therapies into the principles and practice of conventional pediatrics. The authors examine what works and what doesn't and offer practical guidelines for physicians to incorporate integrative medicine into their practice and how to advise patients and their parents on reasonable and effective therapies. The text also covers areas of controversy and identifies areas of uncertainty where future research is needed. Chapters also cite the best available evidence for both safety and efficacy of all therapies discussed. The series editor is Andrew Weil, MD, Professor and Director of the Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizon. Dr. Weil's program was the first academic program in the US and he is the major name in integrative medicine in the US, and well-known around the world. His program's stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."

More and more people living with and beyond cancer seek integrative interventions to complement their conventional cancer care. This second edition of the highly successful Integrative Oncology provides the reader with the most updated information available with new chapters on Music and Expressive Arts Therapies, Naturopathic Oncology, and an integrative approach to Lung Cancer. Integrative medicine is defined as healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle; it emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. This series grows out of a need to organize and make accessible to clinicians the basic principles of integrative medicine in practical application to common health conditions. Each volume focuses on a particular specialty and features well-recognized and authoritative editors and chapter authors. The text is presented in an easy-to-read format featuring case histories, clinical pearls, and useful tables, with all key information highlighted. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD, is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the U.S., and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."

An invaluable, revolutionary, research-based resource for parents--grounded in nutrition, detoxification, and mental wellbeing, while aiming to reduce suffering and promote long-term recovery. "Your child has cancer." Every day, forty-three American families hear these words, thrusting them headlong into the terrifying and unfamiliar territory of pediatric oncology. In A Parent's Guide to Childhood Cancer, pediatric oncology specialist Dagmara Beine guides readers through the most difficult scenario a parent will ever face--a child's diagnosis of life-threatening disease--and argues that the greatest tragedy of conventional oncology is its failure to incorporate safe, effective, and potentially life-saving integrative therapies. In A Parent's Guide to Childhood Cancer, Beine teaches parents how to effectively incorporate these integrative therapies alongside conventional oncology, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Beine's approach is grounded in the metabolic approach to cancer--pioneered by the work of Dr. Nasha Winters--applied to a wildly underserved cancer patient population: children. Topics include: Understanding diagnoses and how to go about seeking a second opinion Assembling a medical team that includes both conventional and integrative oncology experts Essential tests--both conventional and integrative--and how to interpret them How to develop a metabolically healthy, anti-cancer nutrition plan Integrative therapies for specific diagnoses and reducing side effects How to harness post-treatment detoxification and gut-healing protocols The critical importance of, sleep, movement, stress reduction, and time outside Plus much more Therapies covered include: Mistletoe N-Acetyl Cysteine IV Vitamin C Cannabinoids Glutamine Glutathione Low-Dose Naltrexone Melatonin Hyperbaric Oxygen And more With cancer, Beine says, there is no silver bullet. But with a metabolic approach and the wise integration of simple and effective complementary therapies under the supervision of a metabolic oncology practitioner, there is a path forward to what every parent wants for their sons and daughters: a happy childhood.

Like the ground-breaking first edition, Pediatric Psycho-oncology, Second edition puts the child at the centre of medical and psychological care. It broadens the focus beyond treatment and cure to consider the quality of life of the child and their family. Written by an international group of pediatric oncologists and psychologists/psycho-oncologists brought together by an expert editorial team, it focuses on the real-life practical aspects of children undergoing treatment for cancer. This edition has been restructured and opens with a major section on Active treatment, which includes chapters addressing quality of life, pain, psychosocial aspects of treatment and interventions, art therapy and different fantasy-based techniques, palliative care, communication and education, as well as a new chapter on psychopharmacology. Shorter sections then discuss survivorship and care of the dying child, including a new chapter on bereavement. The final section comprises new chapters on ethical considerations and on addressing the emotional needs of children whose parents have cancer, as well as a case study on international collaboration. An appendix provides a comprehensive overview of tools for evaluation and assessment in pediatric psychooncology. This book is a highly practical resource that will be invaluable for all health care professionals looking after children and adolescents with cancer.

Pediatric integrative medicine is a rapidly evolving field with great potential to improve the quality of preventive health in children and expand treatment options for children living with chronic disease. Many families actively use integrative therapies making familiarity with the field essential for clinicians working with pediatrics patients. This book provides a clear, evidence-based overview of the field. Foundations of pediatric health are covered with a goal of reviewing classic information and introducing emerging research in areas such as nutrition science, physical activity and mind-body therapies. Complementary medicine therapies are reviewed with an eye to expanding the conventionally trained clinician’s awareness about traditional healing approaches. Clinical applications explored include: Allergy Asthma Mental health IBS Bullying Obesity Environmental health ADHD Autism The book provides an excellent introduction to a relatively young field and will help the reader understand the scope of current evidence for integrative therapies in children and how to introduce integrative concepts into clinical practice. Integrative Pediatrics is a refreshing must-read for all students and health professionals focused on pediatrics, especially those new to the field or studying at graduate level.
