"The central fact is that we are planning agents." (M. Bratman, Intentions, Plans, and Practical Reasoning, 1987, p. 2) Recent arguments to the contrary notwithstanding, it seems to be the case that people-the best exemplars of general intelligence that we have to date do a lot of planning. It is therefore not surprising that modeling the planning process has always been a central part of the Artificial Intelligence enterprise. Reasonable behavior in complex environments requires the ability to consider what actions one should take, in order to achieve (some of) what one wants and that, in a nutshell, is what AI planning systems attempt to do. Indeed, the basic description of a plan generation algorithm has remained constant for nearly three decades: given a desciption of an initial state I, a goal state G, and a set of action types, find a sequence S of instantiated actions such that when S is executed instate I, G is guaranteed as a result. Working out the details of this class of algorithms, and making the elabora tions necessary for them to be effective in real environments, have proven to be bigger tasks than one might have imagined.

The Intelligent Techniques for Planning presents a number of modern approaches to the area of automated planning. These approaches combine methods from classical planning such as the construction of graphs and the use of domain-independent heuristics with techniques from other areas of artificial intelligence. This book discuses, in detail, a number of state-of-the-art planning systems that utilize constraint satisfaction techniques in order to deal with time and resources, machine learning in order to utilize experience drawn from past runs, methods from knowledge systems for more expressive representation of knowledge and ideas from other areas such as Intelligent Agents. Apart from the thorough analysis and implementation details, each chapter of the book also provides extensive background information about its subject and presents and comments on similar approaches done in the past.

Robotics is an ever-expanding field and intelligent planning continues to play a major role. Given that the intention of mobile robots is to carry out tasks independent from human aid, robot intelligence is needed to make and plan out decisions based on various sensors. Planning is the fundamental activity that implements this intelligence into the mobile robots to complete such tasks. Understanding problems, challenges, and solutions to path planning and how it fits in is important to the realm of robotics. Intelligent Planning for Mobile Robotics: Algorithmic Approaches presents content coverage on the basics of artificial intelligence, search problems, and soft computing approaches. This collection of research provides insight on both robotics and basic algorithms and could serve as a reference book for courses related to robotics, special topics in AI, planning, applied soft computing, applied AI, and applied evolutionary computing. It is an ideal choice for research students, scholars, and professors alike.

The first comparative examination of planning paradigms This text begins with the principle that the ability to anticipateand plan is an essential feature of intelligent systems, whetherhuman or machine. It further assumes that better planning resultsin greater achievements. With these principles as a foundation,Planning in Intelligent Systems provides readers with the toolsneeded to better understand the process of planning and to becomebetter planners themselves. The text is divided into two parts: * Part One, "Theoretical," discusses the predominant schools ofthought in planning: psychology and cognitive science, organizational science, computer science, mathematics, artificialintelligence, and systems theory. In particular, the book examinescommonalities and differences among the goals, methods, andtechniques of these various approaches to planning. The result is abetter understanding of the process of planning through thecross-fertilization of ideas. Each chapter contains a shortintroduction that sets forth the interrelationships of that chapterto the main ideas featured in the other chapters. * Part Two, "Practical," features six chapters that center on acase study of The Netherlands Railways. Readers learn to applytheory to a real-world situation and discoverhow expanding theirrepertoire of planning methods can help solve seemingly intractableproblems. All chapters have been contributed by leading experts in thevarious schools of planning and carefully edited to ensure aconsistent high standard throughout. This book is designed to not only expand the range of planningtools used, but also to enable readers to use them moreeffectively. It challenges readers to look at new approaches andlearn from new schools of thought. Planning in Intelligent Systemsdelivers effective planning approaches for researchers, professors, students, and practitioners in artificial intelligence, computerscience, cognitive psychology, and mathematics, as well as industryplanners and managers.

Artificial Intelligence Planning Systems documents the proceedings of the First International Conference on AI Planning Systems held in College Park, Maryland on June 15-17, 1992. This book discusses the abstract probabilistic modeling of action; building symbolic primitives with continuous control routines; and systematic adaptation for case-based planning. The analysis of ABSTRIPS; conditional nonlinear planning; and building plans to monitor and exploit open-loop and closed-loop dynamics are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the modular utility representation for decision-theoretic planning; reaction and reflection in tetris; and planning in intelligent sensor fusion. Other topics include the resource-bounded adaptive agent, critical look at Knoblock's hierarchy mechanism, and traffic laws for mobile robots. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on AI planning systems.

An Intelligent Inspection Planning System For Prismatic Parts On Cmms written by Slavenko M. Stojadinović and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-09 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book examines an intelligent system for the inspection planning of prismatic parts on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). The content focuses on four main elements: the engineering ontology, the model of inspection planning for prismatic parts on CMMs, the optimisation model of the measuring path based on an ant-colony approach, and the model of probe configuration and setup planning based on a genetic algorithm. The model of inspection planning for CMMs developed here addresses inspection feature construction, the sampling strategy, probe accessibility analysis, automated collision-free operation, and probe path planning. The proposed model offers a novel approach to intelligent inspection, while also minimizing human involvement (and thus the risk of human error) through intelligent planning of the probe configuration and part setup. The advantages of this approach include: reduced preparation times due to the automatic generation of a measuring protocol; potential optimisation of the measuring probe path, i.e., less time needed for the actual measurement; and increased planning process autonomy through minimal human involvement in the setup analysis and probe configuration.

The Design And Development Of An Intelligent Planning Aid written by Stephen J. Andriole and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with categories.

This research note discusses progress in developing an intelligent tactical planning aid. It documents the development of a decision-making, planning, and decision-aiding analytical framework comprising a set of models, a generic task/behavior taxonomy, and an inventory of decision-aiding methods. Six U.S. Army officers participated in two videotaped experiments designed to capture the essence of tactical military planning. Results suggested that tactical planning at the Corps level was goal-oriented and hierarchical, that tactical planning tasks were essentially mediational in nature, and that the 'best' methods available to satisfy the requirements could be found in multi-attribute utility assessment, artificial intelligence, and interactive graphic display techniques. The TACPLAN aid assists tactical military planners at the Corps level by developing new defensive plans via the use of an intelligent tactical planning template which will elicit judgements from the planner, link the judgements to knowledge bases related to the planning process and the problem at hand, and permit the planner to draw his candidate plans through an interactive video disc-based graphic interface. Phase Two research goals include the development of these environmental and challenger capabilities, the development of additional template dimensions, the testing of an evaluation at the Army War College, and documentation.
