Interculturele filosofie is een relatief nieuw werkterrein op het gebied van de filosofie. De actualiteit en de noodzaak ervan is evident in een tijd waarin in de economie en politiek, wetenschap en technologie, kunst en toerisme wereldwijd uitwisselingen plaatsvinden. This book offers a concise overview of the development of intercultural philosophy since the early 1990s, focusing on one of its key pioneers Heinz Kimmerle (1930– 2016). Building on influences from Gadamer, Heidegger, Derrida and Ramose, Kimmerle’s approach to intercultural philosophy is radical and fosters epistemic justice. Kimmerle critically reflected on his own western philosophical tradition, highlighting the problems of a discourse based on a dominant concept of rationality, and of excluding different approaches and participants. Instead, Kimmerle developed an alternative way of thinking, emphasizing the importance Of recognizing philosophies of different cultures. He focused particularly on African philosophies in academic discourse. In the book, the many layers of Kimmerle’s intercultural philosophy are revealed, exploring how dialectics, hermeneutics, deconstruction and decolonization can contribute to epistemic justice. The author goes beyond Kimmerle and demonstrates how Kimmerle’s approach can be further enhanced by using an intersectional approach and by engaging in dialogue with female philosophers and artists. This new study, which also introduces unpublished and untranslated texts from Kimmerle’s work in German and Dutch, will be of considerable interest to researchers of continental philosophy, intercultural and African philosophy, political philosophy, decolonial and feminist studies.

The existential crises involved in translation are part of our political life, especially in times when the closing of borders symbolized by Brexit and the triumph of Donald Trump, present new challenges to those living lives of immigrancy and those waiting at the borders. How to resist the emotive tide of populism and, in particular, the language that legitimates exclusion? How to confront the anxieties of inclusion? These challenges are increasingly pressing. The 2016 Conference of the International Network of Philosophers of Education sought to address such concerns through the theme ‘Philosophy as translation and the understanding of other cultures’. The chapters included here represent the breadth and richness of that conference, addressing questions of ethics, desire, religious understanding, intercultural philosophy, and practices of higher education and teacher education. The processes of translation they discuss are not limited to linguistic translation as conventionally understood. Instead translation is taken to be a window through which to understand how we, as linguistic beings, are constantly in a process of transformation, and how our personal and cultural identities are, hence, also already involved in processes of translation. This book examines the underexplored notion of epistemic marginalization of women in the African intellectual place. Women's issues are still very much neglected by governments, corporate bodies and academics in sub-Saharan Africa. The entrenched traditional world-views which privilege men over women make it difficult for the modern day challenges posed by the neglect of the feminine epistemic perspective, to become obvious. Contributors address these issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives, demonstrating what philosophy could do to ameliorate the epistemic marginalization of women, as well as ways in which African philosphy exacerbates this marginalization. Philosophy is supposed to teach us how to lead the good life in all its ramifications; why is it failing in this duty in Africa where the issue of women’s epistemic vision is concerned? The chapters raise feminist agitations to a new level; beginning from the regular campaigns for various women’s rights and reaching a climax in an epistemic struggle in which the knowledge-controlling power to create, acquire, evaluate, regulate and disseminate is proposed as the last frontier of feminism.

De koranleraar en denker Tierno Bokar trekt tijdens de jaren dertig in Bandiagara (Mali) leerlingen van heinde en ver aan. Zijn persoonlijke en creatieve uitleg van islam werkt als een magneet. Anders dan gebruikelijk in de islam van het Midden-Oosten ziet Bokar voor vrouwen een zelfstandige rol weggelegd en benadrukt hij barmhartigheid voor een goed begrip van de Koran. Hij pleit voor verdraagzaamheid en verzoening. Religie en rede zijn voor hem geen gescheiden compartimenten, maar mentale vermogens die met elkaar verweven raken. De Afrikaanse filosoof Souleymane Bachir Diagne juicht Bokars visie toe, waarin naast andersgelovigen ook atheïsten welkom zijn. Henk Haenen richt zich op de wezenlijke pluraliteit in geloven en denken die Tierno Bokar nastreefde en contrasteert diens visie met reactionaire, onverdraagzame varianten van islam die helaas het imago van deze godsdienst te vaak bepalen. Om deze tegenstelling te onderbouwen zoekt hij in Verdraagzame islam selectief aansluiting bij de zienswijze van de islamoloog Bassam Tibi, die politieke islam afwijst. Maar vooral uitgangspunten van de denker Hannah Arendt onderstrepen het belang van Bokars visie op pluraliteit als rijkdom van de islam. Bokar was bovenal een Afrikaanse sage, een wijsheidsleraar, die met verve humorvolle verhalen en rake parabels vertelde. Ze weerspiegelen een levensfilosofie die ook de beroemde regisseur Peter Brook inspireerde. Hij bracht Tierno Bokar onder meer in New York, Amsterdam en Brussel op de planken.

In doordenken doorwerken tonen vijftien filosofen alternatieve en nieuwe wegen om met de grote en complexe thema’s uit onze huidige tijd om te gaan. Als basis gebruiken ze ‘een ontwerp’ uit een boek dat zijn tijd ver vooruit bleek te zijn. In "Entwurf einer Philosophie des Wir. Schule des alternativen Denkens" uit 1983 schetst Heinz Kimmerle reeds de urgentie om ons denken te veranderen. We moeten ons hoe dan ook op een radicaal andere manier tot de wereld, tot elkaar en tot onszelf gaan verhouden. Kimmerle schetst een ontwerp voor een filosofie van het ‘wij’. Meer dan dertig jaar nadat hij dit eerste ontwerp presenteert, lijkt in het denken van vele mensen een kantelpunt te zijn bereikt. Het is overduidelijk dat oude manieren van denken geen uitweg meer bieden. We lopen vast. Niet alleen is de urgentie van intercultureel filosoferen groter dan ooit, er is tevens behoefte aan een integrale ecofilosofie of ecosofie. Vijftien filosofen, die vanuit verschillende invalshoeken in de praktijk van alledag werken, buigen zich over deze kanteling. De noodzaak die zij al eerder vanuit het filosoferen aanvoelden, daagt hen nu uit nieuwe wegen in kaart te brengen. Ze laten zien dat denken en doen, theorie en praktijk niet tegenover elkaar staan, maar elkaar voortdurend versterken. Filosoferen is niet vrijblijvend. Het zet aan tot handelen.
