The 'narrative turn' in the humanities, which expanded the study of narrative to various disciplines, has found a correlate in the 'medial turn' in narratology. Long restricted to language-based literary fiction, narratology has found new life in the recognition that storytelling can take place in a variety of media, and often combines signs belonging to different semiotic categories: visual, auditory, linguistic and perhaps even tactile. The essays gathered in this volume apply the newly gained awareness of the expressive power of media to particular texts, demonstrating the productivity of a medium-aware analysis. Through the examination of a wide variety of different media, ranging from widely studied, such as literature and film, to new, neglected, or non-standard ones, such as graphic novels, photography, television, musicals, computer games and advertising, they address some of the most fundamental questions raised by the medial turn in narratology: how can narrative meaning be created in media other than language; how do different types of signs collaborate with each other in so-called 'multi-modal works', and what new forms of narrativity are made possible by the emergence of digital media.

More and more 21st-century writers invoke new media in their literary texts and explore the limits of the novel as a medium by using intermedial and transmedial storytelling techniques. Owing to the rapid changes in the media landscape and the book market, new literary experiments and genres in printed, electronic, and enhanced formats are cropping up nearly every day.0This interdisciplinary study on ?fictions of the Internet? gives a broad and extensive overview of the manifold tendencies in contemporary writing that are influenced by the Internet and new media on a thematic, structural, and transmedial level. It combines text-centered with transgeneric, transmedial, and cultural-oriented approaches, and focuses on three main concepts?namely, ?intermediality?, ?transmedia storytelling?, and ?genre/generic change?. Close readings of texts by Dave Eggers, Jarett Kobek, Lucy Kellaway, Nick Hornby, Jeffery Deaver, Marisha Pessl, and Andreas Winkelmann show that contemporary writers do not simply add intermedial references to their stories, but instead use media for a variety of storytelling purposes. The study argues that contemporary novels have creatively responded to the changing media landscape with regard to their content, form, materiality, technological support, and interactive and participatory features, and proposes new generic terms for literary innovations that are related to the Internet and new media.

This book argues that narrative literature very often, if not always, include significant amounts of what appears to be extra-literary material – in form and in content – and that we too often ignore this dimension of literature. It offers an up to date overview and discussion of intermedial theory, and it facilitates a much-needed dialogue between the burgeoning field of intermedial studies on the one side and the already well-developed methods of literary analysis on the other. The book aims at working these two fields together into a productive working method. Multispecies Storytelling in Intermedial Practices is a speculative endeavor asking how we may represent, relay, and read worlds differently by seeing other species as protagonists in their own rights. What other stories are to be invented and told from within those many-tongued chatters of multispecies collectives? Could such stories teach us how to become human otherwise? Often, the human is defined as the sole creature who holds language, and consequently is capable of articulating, representing, and reflecting upon the world. And yet, the world is made and remade by ongoing and many-tongued conversations between various organisms reverberating with sound, movement, gestures, hormones, and electrical signals. Everywhere, life is making itself known, heard, and understood in a wide variety of media and modalities. Some of these registers are available to our human senses, while some are not. Facing a not-so-distant future catastrophe, which in many ways and for many of us is already here, it is becoming painstakingly clear that our imaginaries are in dire need of corrections and replacements. How do we cultivate and share other kinds of stories and visions of the world that may hold promises of modest, yet radical hope? If we keep reproducing the same kind of languages, the same kinds of scientific gatekeeping, the same kinds of stories about "our" place in nature, we remain numb in the face of collapse. Though the phenomenon known as “unreliable narration” or “narrative unreliability” has received a lot of attention during the last two decades, narratological research has mainly focused on its manifestations in narrative fiction, particularly in homodiegetic or first-person narration. The present volume redresses the balance by directing scholarly attention to disciplines and domains that narratology has so far largely ignored. This volume is a pioneering study in the theory and history of the imitation of music in fiction and constitutes an important contribution to current intermediality research. Starting with a comparison of basic similarities and differences between literature and music, the study goes on to provide outlines of a general theory of intermediality and its fundamental forms, in which a more specialized theory of the musicalization of (narrative) literature based on contemporary narratology and a typology of the forms of musico-literary intermediality are embedded. It also addresses the question of how to recognize a musicalized fiction when reading one and why Sterne's Tristram Shandy, contrary to what has been previously said, is not to be regarded as a musicalized fiction. In its historical part, the study explores forms and functions of experiments with the musicalization of fiction in English literature. After a survey of the major preconditions for musicalization - the increasing appreciation of music in 18th and 19th-century aesthetics and its main causes - exemplary fictional texts from romanticism to postmodernism are analyzed. Authors interpreted are De Quincey, Joyce, Woolf, A. Huxley, Beckett, Burgess and Josipovici. Whilst the limitations of a transposition of music into fiction remain apparent, experiments in this field yield valuable insights into mainly a-mimetic and formalist aesthetic tendencies in the development of more recent fiction as a whole and also show to what extent traditional conceptions of music continue to influence the use of this medium in literature. The volume is of relevance for students and scholars of English, comparative and general literature as well as for readers who take an interest in intermediality or interart research.
