This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V: PHYSIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS. If it were possible that I could build up a human body, and that the materials for so doing were ready at my command, I should first study, for my guidance, the organism of a person in perfect health. I should ascertain what materials had been employed in his construction--their uses, quality, and proportionate quantities. The fabric having been completed, and the several organs set in motion (and, as we will suppose, with success), my next inquiry would be as to the nature of the food appropriate for the support of this animated machine; and, so far as matters worked well, I should be content. But if the several organs worked inharmoniously, and especially if certain diseases manifested themselves, which were known to arise from improper dictation, from excess or deficiency of certain matters required by the system, or from derangement of the digestive organs, I should, in either case, exercise additional care and caution in the selection of food, and in regulating the quantitative supply of those materials. I should likewise endeavour to restore any peccant organ to its former allegiance, and to the satisfactory performance of its natural duties. Should ill-suited or unwholesome articles of food continue to be employed, and, as a natural consequence, the products of digestion be rendered distasteful or possibly poisonous, to the system, diseases would immediately arise, which would set medical skill at utter defiance till all dietary arrangements were satisfactorily determined. And if I were careful in examining and regulating the ingested materials, and most of which become injurious, if not lethal, when they accumulate, or are unduly retained in the system, I should feel it my duty to ascertain, ..

This volume is the newest release in the authoritative series issued by the National Academy of Sciences on dietary reference intakes (DRIs). This series provides recommended intakes, such as Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), for use in planning nutritionally adequate diets for individuals based on age and gender. In addition, a new reference intake, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), has also been established to assist an individual in knowing how much is "too much" of a nutrient. Based on the Institute of Medicine's review of the scientific literature regarding dietary micronutrients, recommendations have been formulated regarding vitamins A and K, iron, iodine, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, and other potentially beneficial trace elements such as boron to determine the roles, if any, they play in health. The book also: Reviews selected components of food that may influence the bioavailability of these compounds. Develops estimates of dietary intake of these compounds that are compatible with good nutrition throughout the life span and that may decrease risk of chronic disease where data indicate they play a role. Determines Tolerable Upper Intake levels for each nutrient reviewed where adequate scientific data are available in specific population subgroups. Identifies research needed to improve knowledge of the role of these micronutrients in human health. This book will be important to professionals in nutrition research and education.

Dyspepsia In Clinical Practice written by Marko Duvnjak and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-08 with Medical categories.

Although dyspepsia has been investigated for a long period of time, there is no international agreement on what constitutes this condition nor any standardized guidelines. National guidelines followed by practitioners in different countries vary in diagnostic and therapeutic approach, underlining the necessity for a unique definition worldwide. Dyspepsia in Clinical Practice summarizes the current guidelines while offering a unified, practical definition of dyspepsia, and a diagnostic algorithm with an emphasis on the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and rational first-line therapeutic approach based on epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup and response to previous therapy. Up-to-date scientific information about dyspepsia is presented from a practical, clinician's point of view. Written by experts in the field, this volume addresses dyspepsia in childhood and in the elderly, a very important issue often insufficiently emphasized in the literature. Guidelines are provided that can be easily followed in clinical practice, leading to a reduction in costs and increased patient safety. Dyspepsia in Clinical Practice will be of great value to gastroenterologists, internists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, residents and fellows in training.
