In 1877 Svendsen, by then quite famous in Germany and Scandinavia, was invited to conduct a concert of his own works for King Oscar II and his guests at the royal palace in Oslo. A member of the orchestra later described the event: "It was an unpleasant, bitterly cold forenoon. . . . The musicians were not in very good spirits. . . . Then Svendsen jumped up on the cloth-bedecked conductor's platform and said in an authoritative voice: 'Gentlemen, when the royal entourage comes into this room, there is just one king, and that is - me.'" In 1883 he became musical director of the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and during the ensuing years guest conducted virtually all of the major orchestras of Europe.

Based on Icelandic folk tunes these two short pieces for string orchestra are among some of the finest examples of Svendsen's occupation with the theme of national identity in music and are a testament to the composers philanthropic ideals. Ideals he shared with the dedicatee of the work, Carl Warmuth, who took over his father's music store in 1874 and who flourished as an agent and champion of music in the composers home town of Christiania.

An International Annotated Bibliography Of Strindberg Studies 1870 2005 The Plays written by Michael Robinson and has been published by MHRA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.

This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 1, General Studies (978-0-947623-81-4) and Volume 3, Prose, Poetry, Miscellaneous (978-0-947623-83-8) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.

Grace Notes For A Year written by Norman Gilliland and has been published by NEMO Productions this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This irresistible collection of stories is perfect for anyone interested in a fresh perspective on what it means to be a human being who creates art. Grace Notes for a Year sheds light on the fragile and perilous process of inspiration, composition, and performance required to create classical music, whether the final product is a masterpiece or a mess. Each page of the book corresponds to a different day of the year and features a true story about a famous figure in musical history. These delightful anecdotes—inspirational, informative, and often hilarious—disprove the myth of the artist as untouchable. Instead, Norman Gilliland exposes in them human vulnerability we can all relate to. From Beethoven to Wagner, these artists suffered from poverty, spent lazy days in bed, had scandalous love affairs, and often failed in their creative endeavors as often as they succeeded.
