"Justine oder vom Missgeschick der Tugend" (franz. Originaltitel: Justine ou les Malheurs de la vertu) ist ein Roman des Schriftstellers Marquis de Sade, den er 1787 während seiner Inhaftierung in der Bastille verfasste. De Sade fertigte seinen Roman in drei Fassungen (1. Fassung 1787, 2. Fassung 1791 und 3. Fassung 1797). Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich um die dritte und ausführlichste Fassung des Werks. Die Urfassung wurde von de Sade innerhalb von zwei Wochen erstellt und erst 1909 von Guillaume Apollinaire wiederentdeckt. Die späteren Varianten enthalten neue Episoden und Erweiterungen der alten Episoden. Besonders in der dritten Fassung wurden zahlreiche ins Detail gehende sadomasochistische Obszönitäten hinzugefügt. Zusätzlich wurden eine Reihe von philosophischen Betrachtungen in die Handlung eingeflochten. Justine und Juliette sind die Töchter eines bankrotten Kaufmanns. Nach dem Tod der nahezu mittellosen Mutter beschließt Juliette, als Prostituierte ins Bordell zu gehen, verübt eine Reihe von Verbrechen, erwirbt Reichtum und wird glücklich. Justine hingegen wählt den Weg der Tugend, erlebt hierbei eine Reihe von Abenteuern und Missgeschicken und wird fortwährend Verfolgungen und Erniedrigungen ausgesetzt, bis sie - wegen Mordes und Brandstiftung unter Anklage stehend - wieder ihre Schwester trifft, der sie ihr Lebensschicksal erzählt, bevor sie in einem Gewitter vom Blitz erschlagen wird.

Nada lo prueba, pero expertos en Sade como Maurice Heine en 1930 y Jean-Jacques Pauvert en 1986 aseguran que es verosimil, aunque no seguro, que terminara de escribir el primer borrador de Justine o Los infortunios de la virtud hacia finales de 1788. Entre esta version y la que se imprimio en 1791 (esto si, en cambio, se sa be con seguridad gracias a una carta del propio Sade a su mujer) hay diferencias notables, entre otras la de extension. Es probable que Sade perdiera de vista los manuscritos que fueron encontrados en su celda despues del 4 de julio de 1789, cuando fue liberado de la bastilla al triunfar la Revolucion. Esto induce a pensar que el habia entregado ya clandestinamente a su mujer el manuscrito de Justine durante una de sus visitas, como todos los demas manuscritos escritos en prision, que, gracias a este sistema, han llegado hasta nosotros. Ahora bien, en mayo de 1790, Madame de Sade decide separarse legalmente de su marido reteniendo todos sus papeles. Tan solo a finales de ese ano llegan a un acuerdo de divorcio mediante el cual se presume que Sade recupera, entre otras cosas, sus manuscritos. De modo que es licito deducir que Sade habra redactado la version definitiva de 1791, o bien entre enero y junio de 1789, o bien entre la primavera de 1790 y la de 1791. An early work by the Marquis de Sade "Justine, Or, The Misfortunes of Virtue" was originally written during a two week period in 1787 while the author was imprisoned in the Bastille. The story is concerned with the titular character, a twelve year old maiden who sets off, to make her way in France, and follows her through age twenty-six in her quest for virtue. In the search for work and shelter Justine continuously falls prey to a series of scoundrels who subject her to sexual torture and abuse. Having been numerously revised by the author and published in varying censored and unexpurgated editions there exists no definitive edition of this work. Presented here in this volume is the expurgated edition originally published by the Risus Press in 1931.
