Handscroll;Ink and color on silk;198cm(width)*22cm(height) This work depicts thirteen concubines and maids with buns perched high on their heads, with slender eyes and round faces, wearing long dresses trailing on the ground, sitting idly with their fans. They are engaged in activities like opening purses, playing musical instruments, putting on makeup in front of the mirror, embroidering, fanning, resting, and other daily situations. The scroll is arranged horizontally to display the various activities of the figures. The rhythm varies, and the composition is highly organized. The figures are richly dressed with well-rounded figures, but they appear melancholy, lonely, frustrated, and depressed.

Zhao Mengfu written by Shane McCausland and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Zhao Mengfu has enormous significance for Chinese art history. This work presents a new, synthetic portrait of the artist's development from the 1280s to his death in 1322, and evaluates his pivotal role in the social-political context in Yuan China as well as the development of the artist's self-consciousness. Shane McCausland's study features detailed interpretations of pictorial forms in light of historical changes, and close readings of critical colophons, many of whic are appended to artworks but neglected as visual sources. These readings are meant to stimulate visual analysis of the oeuvre as well as debate about the use of Tang (618-907) and other period modes as models for the 'Yuan renaissance.' The book challenges stereotypes portraying Zhao Mengfu as a traitor or careerist. The historical background of dynastic change and Mongol rule is treated in a revisionist manner that aims to contextualize the traditional Chinese hostility towards Zhao Mengfu as a Yuan scholar-official. The concern here is for his development, in the context of Mongol rule, as a Chinese scholar-artist. This book will be a must for scholars, curators, and other specialists in Chinese painting and calligraphy, especially those focusing on Yuan dynasty and literati painting. Shane McCauslandis a lecturer in the history of Chinese art in the Department of Art and Archaeology at SOAS, University of London.

This volume presents the first English translation of the Confucian classics, Four Books for Women, with extensive commentary by the compiler, Wang Xiang, and introductions and annotations by translator Ann A. Pang-White. Written by women for women's education, the Confucian Four Books for Women spanned the 1st to the 16th centuries, and encompass Ban Zhao's Lessons for Women, Song Ruoxin's and Song Ruozhao's Analects for Women, Empress Renxiaowen's Teachings for the Inner Court, and Madame Liu's (Chaste Widow Wang's) Short Records of Models for Women. A female counterpart to the famous Sishu (Four Books) compiled by Zhu Xi, Wang Xiang's Nü sishu provides an invaluable look at the long-standing history and evolution of Chinese women's writing, education, identity, and philosophical discourse, along with their struggles and triumphs, across the millennia and numerous Chinese dynasties. Pang-White's new translation brings the authors of the Four Books for Women to life as real, living people, and illustrates why they wrote and how their work empowered women.

The New York Times bestselling account of one of history's most brutal—and forgotten—massacres, when the Japanese army destroyed China's capital city on the eve of World War II, "piecing together the abundant eyewitness reports into an undeniable tapestry of horror". (Adam Hochschild, Salon) In December 1937, one of the most horrific atrocities in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking (what was then the capital of China), and within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered. In this seminal work, Iris Chang, whose own grandparents barely escaped the massacre, tells this history from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers, that of the Chinese, and that of a group of Westerners who refused to abandon the city and created a safety zone, which saved almost 300,000 Chinese. Drawing on extensive interviews with survivors and documents brought to light for the first time, Iris Chang's classic book is the definitive history of this horrifying episode.

What is linguistics? What does a linguist do? . . . He studies the way people speak. . . . What! Thats ridiculous? Who does not know how to speak except a deaf-mute? What is there to study? Li Fang-Kuei, one of the foremost Chinese linguists in the world, encountered the skepticism of his prospective mother-in-law in the 1920s when he returned to China and wished to ask her daughters hand in marriage. Li studied general linguistics at the University of Chicago with Edward Sapir. His research in American Indian languages took him into the wilds of northern Canada; his study of non-Han ethnic minority languages in China took him to the borders of Tibet, Thailand and Vietnam. Lis career as a scholar, linguist, and adventurer from his idyllic years of study in America, through the war-torn years in China, and peaceful retirement in Hawaii, is tantalizingly sketched in this chronological biography.
