Le jour où j'ai changé de bord est l'histoire de Ian, un éducateur rémois de 28 ans, célibataire endurci. Grâce à son frère, Tom, il fait la connaissance d'un adolescent gay et introverti, Nathaniel. Dans un premier temps, ce garçon l'agace mais Ian a un bon fond. A la demande de Tom, il prend Nathaniel sous son aile, jusqu'à en faire son colocataire lorsque le garçon se retrouve à la rue. Peu à peu, Ian prend conscience que Nathaniel lui plaît mais il se refuse à le lui avouer. Rien ne dit que les sentiments de Nathaniel sont réciproques et de toute façon, il a quelqu'un. Il leur faudra l'électrochoc d'un terrible accident pour qu'ils s'avouent leurs sentiments. A l'issue de la convalescence de Ian, la colocation se transforme en vie à deux, non sans quelques difficultés. Ian doit s'assumer en tant que bisexuel vis-à-vis de ses amis, de ses collègues... Du côté de sa sexualité, par contre, il assume très bien ! Leur relation devient plus forte de jour en jour. Ils affrontent ensemble les séquelles de l'accident de Ian et celui-ci est toujours là pour encourager Nathaniel, notamment dans ses études. Lorsque ce dernier obtient son diplôme et doit partir poursuivre ses études dans une autre université, c'est une véritable déchirure. Leur couple doit survivre à la distance... L'un comme l'autre se plonge dans le travail. De son côté, Ian fait la connaissance de jumeaux en difficulté qui sèment la terreur au foyer de l'enfance où il travaille. Jordan est violent mais il protège avant tout son frère, Julien, gay. Ian arrive à bâtir une relation de confiance telle que, lorsque les adolescents refusent de partir dans un autre foyer, il fait tout pour devenir leur famille d'accueil. Devenu leur tuteur, Ian, puis Nathaniel dans son rôle de grand-frère, vont les guider sur la voie du bonheur. Dès lors, on suit aussi les aventures des jumeaux. Deux adolescents dont l'un est hétéro et protecteur, l'autre gay et amoureux. Julien n'a pas choisi le garçon le plus facile. David vit encore au foyer. Victime d'un père pédophile, il doit se reconstruire. Julien se heurte à sa peur de l'autre, sa peur de la sexualité également, mais ça ne lui fait pas peur. De son côté, Jordan trouve en Ian un modèle et se métamorphose. Encouragés, soutenus et guidés par Ian et Nathaniel, les trois garçons évolueront chacun à leur manière. Ian et Nathaniel poursuivent leur vie de couple. En dehors d'être des tuteurs impliqués, ils trouvent le temps de se pacser, entourés de leurs amis et de leur famille de cœur. Un dernier événement va venir secouer leur petite vie tranquille : des amies lesbiennes demandent à Ian d'être le père de leur enfant et d'en partager l'éducation. Une décision qu'ils prennent à deux. Devenir père était un rêve inavoué pour Ian et accueillir deux adolescents lui a fait réaliser à quel point ce serait bien, d'avoir un enfant à lui, à eux. Nathaniel se pense trop jeune mais le bonheur de Ian vaut la peine de faire un effort. La naissance de leur fille Léa marquera le début d'une nouvelle étape dans leur vie...
